Prentice Institute Affiliate of the Month:

Dr. Sandra Dixon


Dr. Sandra Dixon is a Registered Psychologist in Alberta and an Associate Professor of Counselling Psychology in the Faculty of Education at the University of Lethbridge. She teaches in both the online Master of Counselling (MC) and the face-to-face Master of Education (MEd), Counselling Psychology programs. Dr. Dixon has been actively involved in building a rigorous research agenda as a scholar. Her vision as a researcher is to develop a robust research program that reaches a wide local, national, and international audience. Her bicultural identity informs the streams of her research which a informed by a social justice and multicultural lens. Her research presently includes three major foci. First, she is exploring culturally sensitive and faith inclusive counselling practices among immigrants. Second, she is investigating how mental health professionals accommodate faith in their counselling practices with racialized immigrant groups. Lastly, she is working to shed light on the lived experiences of women in the academy who self-identify as Black, Indigenous and Women of Colour (BIWOC).

“The phenomenon of political polarization is emerging as one of the most pressing global problems of the coming decade. It has recently received particular attention in academia, the media, and politics. The triad of polarization, pandemic and populism is leading to greater political instability, conflict, and social tensions on a global scale.”

In partnership with NSERC and CIHR, SSHRC is highlighting research findings from the Living Within the Earth’s Carrying Capacity Knowledge Synthesis Grants in the form of Evidence Briefs to help grant holders share information about their projects with policy makers and the wider public.

New Research Assistant with the Prentice Institute

Ogochukwu Kelechi Onyeso is a new graduate research assistant at the Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy. He completed Nigerian Certificate in (science) Education, bachelor- and master’s degrees in medical rehabilitation (physiotherapy). Currently, a doctoral student in Population Studies in Health at the University of Lethbridge, his research explores sociodemographic determinants of mobility limitations across the life course.  He has over seven years of clinical physiotherapy experience and had published a few articles in high impact journals. He is the editor of Physiolight Magazine. Ogochukwu is skilled in quantitative data analysis and modelling. He is excited to work with staff and affiliates of the Prentice Institute – a large international collaborative and productive research environment.

WHAT’S NEW FOR THE 2021-2022 CALL FOR PROPOSALS?

  • One application stream: Community-based projects are eligible to receive up to $25,000 in grant funding. New applicants and organizations that have not been funded in the past five years are encouraged to apply.
  • To simplify the application process and provide funds to communities more rapidly, organizations must complete and submit their application online.
  • Organizations will be invited to apply for funding that supports the program’s national priorities:

Prentice Institute Request for Proposals


The Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy is announcing a second phase of four different funding streams with the broader goals of: (1) conducting research on the changing human populations and the potential impacts on social, environmental, and economic issues; (2) seeking to understand long-term changes in human and economic environments, within an historical context, with particular attention to the role human actions play in influencing these outcomes; and (3) communicating the outputs of the Prentice Institute and its Affiliates work to stimulate further research and to enable individuals, governments, and corporations to make better-informed decisions.

NRC Aging in Place Call for Proposals


This call for proposals is a joint endeavour between the National Research Council of Canada's (NRC) Aging in Place Challenge program and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research - Institute of Aging (CIHR-IA). The focus of this call is to seek technological solutions to assist older adults with mental health conditions and/or those who experience social isolation so they can live well in the community. For the purpose of this call, technological solutions are defined as devices or interventions that are enabled or enhanced by technology. This call is open to development of novel technologies, or research investigating novel application of existing technologies.

Winter 2022 Implementation Science in Patient-Oriented Research Certificate

This course covers theory, methodology, and practical work, encompassing elements that are common across Implementation Science (IS) theory, methods, and frameworks. This course is intended to provide a breadth of knowledge and skill in IS with ample opportunity to discuss the concepts with other learners and the course moderators. Examples used throughout the course will primarily focus on the context in Alberta, but the course is open to participants from outside Alberta.
