COPEH-Canada New Course and Webinar Series:

This graduate level field course and webinar series on ecosystem approaches to health will be held at four “sites” in May-June: Montréal (UQAM), Guelph (University of Guelph), Prince George (UNBC), and an online “site.” Eight two-hour sessions are conducted as simultaneous webinars across the sites.

Work without workers: legal geographies of family farm exclusions from labour laws in Alberta, Canada (New Article from the Director of the Prentice Institute)

Under the Canadian labour laws that govern workplace safety, wage, and other work conditions, ‘family’ workers are not covered by the law under special rules for agriculture. Among other legal exclusions, the family farm exclusion contributes to a dearth of basic work, health, and safety standards in the sector, despite the commercialization and industrialization of family farming activities. Through a focus on Alberta, Canada—where farm labour rules have only applied to agriculture since 2016—this article explores the family exclusion in relation to family farming experiences with work and risk, based on interviews with farm operators, their family members, and farm employees in Alberta. While some participants continued to press for exemptions for farms from labour rules under the rationale that there is intrinsic safety within families, the findings also reveal how other participants have begun questioning this rationale, despite their overall support for the family farm exemption in Alberta.

Kolasky Distinguished Visiting Fellowship for the Study of Contemporary Ukraine 2022-2023

The Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, University of Alberta, invites applications for the inaugural Kolasky Distinguished Visiting Fellowship for the Study of Contemporary Ukraine. The fellowship will be offered in 2022-2023 for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year, subject to review. Research proposals should be within the political science discipline. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in global security, international relations, and peace studies.

SHRCC Seeks Indigenous Strategy Director

As the Director, Indigenous Strategy at the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, you will play a central role to lead on engagement, policy development and program implementation that will focus on First Nations, Métis and Inuit leadership in research.

As a key person in charge of the implementation of the federal funding agencies Indigenous Strategic Plan “Setting New Directions to Support Indigenous Research and Research Training in Canada”, you will have the opportunity to engage with Indigenous advisory committees to the federal agencies and coordinate our actions towards the objectives of Reconciliation and how research can contribute to Reconciliation.

Prentice Institute Seeks to fill Intern Positions

Prentice Institute – Undergraduate Summer Internships

Position Details

The Prentice Institute for Global Population and Economy is seeking interns to participate in the (paid) Undergraduate Summer Internship Program 2022. The successful candidates will commence work during Summer Semester 1 (May 2022). Depending on the successful candidates’ responsibilities and availability, these internships can range from 10 – 40 hours per week and are anticipated to run between May 1 and September 1, 2022.

The Summer Internship Program is designed to provide students hands-on experience in conducting and supporting elements through-out the research process, but particularly toward supporting and collaborating with Institute’ researchers using quantitative data.

Responsibilities

· Conducting literature searches and reviews of academic and grey literatures

· Providing copy editing support for manuscripts, working papers, and policy briefs

· Collecting and producing supporting documentation for grant proposals

· Providing research assistance as needed (may include coding, data management, analyses, visualization and reporting)

· Assisting in the research and knowledge mobilization activities of the Institute more generally (may include events, guest speakers, and community-based outreach

Qualifications

· Enrolled at the University of Lethbridge, undergraduate

· Applicants are welcome from any program of study, but a preference will be given to students working in areas immediately relevant to the mandate of the Institute

· Ability to work independently, solid communication skills both verbal and written, and capacity to work remotely

· GPA 3.2 or higher

· Proficiency in Statistical analysis software (SPSS, Stata) is an asset but not required
