Be Storm Ready

We are at the beginning of our region’s winter weather season, and a wintry mix is possible for late Sunday through Monday. Confidence is rising for notable ice accumulations during this time frame. Power outages and fallen trees are likely due to the ice, and travel may be impacted.

Now is a great time to take stock of your household’s preparedness for snow, ice, and power outages. Prepare a checklist of things to do when you hear that a winter storm is possible.

View an Emergency Kit Checklist

PREPARE YOUR HOME

  • Make sure you have a snow shovel and ice melt (or salt) on hand for after the storm.
  • Have flashlights handy with spare batteries.
  • Learn how to shut off water valves in case a pipe bursts.
  • Have additional heat sources on hand in case of power outages.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher accessible.
  • Check that your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are functioning.

PREPARE YOUR CAR

  • Batteries lose power as temperatures drop, be sure to have yours tested.
  • Check your car’s antifreeze level.
  • Replace your car’s windshield wiper fluid with a wintertime mix.
  • Replace your car’s worn tires and wiper blades.
  • Pack an emergency kit. Include: jumper cables, flashlight and batteries, flares or triangles, warm blanket, ice scraper, first-aid kit, drinking water and snacks, and a tow strap.
  • Add air to your car’s tires as the weather gets colder. Proper tire pressure can be found on the placard on your driver’s side door.
  • Make sure your wipers are in good condition and avoid using them as ice scrapers.

PREPARE FOR POWER OUTAGES

  • Take an inventory of the items you need that rely on electricity.
  • Have a battery-powered radio available to obtain the latest news or condition reports.
  • Talk to your medical provider about a power outage plan for medical devices powered by electricity and refrigerated medicines. Find out how long medication can be stored at higher temperatures and get specific guidance for any medications that are critical for life.
  • Plan for batteries and other alternatives to meet your needs when the power goes out.
  • Determine whether your home phone will work in a power outage and how long battery backup will last.
  • Have flashlights with extra batteries for every household member.
  • Have enough nonperishable food and water for every household member, including pets.
  • Use a thermometer in the refrigerator and freezer so that you can know the temperature when the power is restored. If the temperature is 40 degrees or higher, throw away or compost food.
  • Keep mobile phones and other electric equipment charged and gas tanks full.
