Prepared for the Common Good

A message from Deacon Adam James

This Sunday’s worship marks a turning point in the season after Epiphany. After Christmas and the birth of Jesus, we hear how others come to recognize him as the Messiah. Through these moments of recognition, we see more clearly who Christ is. As the season unfolds, the focus turns outward. What has been revealed is not meant to stay contained. It is meant to shape how we live and act in the world. Faith is not held privately in times like these. It is carried into public life.

That movement raises a demanding question. How do we carry Christ’s teachings into a world that feels fractured and uncertain? The Church responds by forming people to live faithfully where they are. Faith takes shape through steady action, consistency, and service to others.

This Sunday, we also celebrate Scout Sunday and honor our Scout Pack and Troop 16. Scouting offers a clear example of what it means to prepare your life for service beyond yourself. Scouts learn readiness, responsibility, and attentiveness to others. They are formed through practice, reflection, and teaching that shape both skills and character.

Scouting builds habits that matter in uncertain times. Responsibility builds trust, and cooperation strengthens community. Care for creation reflects respect for life, and service teaches people how to act with purpose when others hesitate. Together, these habits show how Christ’s teachings can be lived in everyday situations.

Preparation grows from commitment rather than fear. Scouts prepare so they can be useful when the moment comes. The Church prepares people in a similar way. Formation matters because faith is meant to be lived beyond the walls of worship. What we practice together shapes how we show up in the world.

From my perspective as a deacon, this outward turn of the season after Epiphany points directly to service. Service is where faith becomes visible and credible. It grounds belief in real needs and real relationships. When people ask what difference their faith can make right now, the answer often begins with preparation. Prepare your life to serve others. Prepare your time to be shared. Prepare your skills to meet real needs. These choices may seem modest, but they carry Christ’s teachings into places that need light.

Scout Sunday reminds us that formation takes time. Character grows through repetition, accountability, and shared values. The Church shares this formational concern because the world needs people who are ready to serve with steadiness and care.

This Sunday’s worship invites you to embrace that calling. As God sends us outward to serve in the world, we are invited to reflect on the gifts we have been given and how they might be shared. As we give thanks for Scouting and gather as a community, we are reminded that Christ’s light continues to shine through people who prepare their lives for service in unsettled times.

What is the Season of Lent?

Lent is a 40-day journey of reflection and renewal, rooted in Jesus’ time in the wilderness, that invites us to step away from distractions and ask deeper questions: Who am I, and who is God calling me to be? In the Episcopal Church, we mark this season with purple, a color that symbolizes reflection, transformation, and the deep work of the soul. Lent isn’t just about giving something up; it’s about making space for prayer, self-examination, and acts of love. Wherever you are on your spiritual path, Lent isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about showing up, asking the questions, and letting God meet you on the journey.

Lenten Sermon Series: Following Jesus Together

In our Sunday Scripture readings this Lent, we’ll hear some of the greatest stories about Jesus: standing up to Satan in the wilderness, teaching the experts how to live by the Spirit, seeing deeply into the Samaritan woman’s heart, giving sight to a man born blind, and raising Lazarus from the dead. How can we follow where Jesus is leading us? When we try to travel alone, we’re more likely to get lost or stumble on the rocks along the path. But when we turn to those alongside us, the way becomes much more clear … and more life-giving. Through the Sundays of Lent, we’ll find the path Jesus is setting before us, consider how we might be tempted to stray, and give thanks for the companions God gives us on the way.

Companion Groups: Life Shared, Faith Explored

Many of us are living with questions that don’t resolve quickly, questions about faith, about Scripture, and about how to live faithfully in a complicated and changing world. For some, long-held assumptions feel less certain. For others, faith feels active and alive, but unfinished, still asking something of us.

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus meets the deepest questions of faith and life not by sending people off on their own, but by gathering them together. He forms disciples through shared life, conversation, and presence, walking with them as they listen, question, and learn along the way. That same invitation to live and discern together remains open to us today.

Beginning in Lent, St. Andrew’s will offer Companion Groups, small groups that will gather monthly to reflect on Scripture and on how faith is intersecting with everyday life. Between gatherings, participants will spend time with Scripture using shared reflection prompts provided by the church. Group meetings will offer space for reflection, listening, and prayer.

Details at a glance:

Adults, middle school-aged youth, and high school-aged youth at St. Andrew’s are invited to take part in shared reflection and conversation. Groups will begin meeting in March and will gather monthly. Sign-ups are open now through the First Sunday of Lent.
