PRESS RELEASE
CDC Provides First In-Season Estimates of Flu Illnesses, Medical Visits, and Hospitalizations. According to new data released by CDC, so far during the 2018-2019 season between about 6 and 7 million people have been sick with flu, up to half of those people have sought medical care for their illness, and between 69,000 and 84,000 people have been hospitalized from flu.  (CDC, 1/11/19)

Emergence of Extensively Drug-Resistant Salmonella Typhi Infections Among Travelers to or from Pakistan - United States, 2016-2018. During 2006-2015, 79% of US isolates from typhoid fever patients who traveled to Pakistan were fluoroquinolone nonsusceptible. During 2016-2018, typhoid fever was diagnosed in 29 US patients with recent Pakistan travel; five had XDR Typhi.  (MMWR, 1/11/19)

The Presidential Advisory Council on Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria. The January 30th-31st public meeting will be dedicated to hosting stakeholders to explore priority areas that have emerged since the original National Action Plan on Combating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria (CARB) was launched in 2015.  (HHS, 1/19)

DoD Selects Smiths Detection for Advanced Development of Aerosol and Vapor Chemical Agent Detector. Smiths Detection (SDI) has been selected by the U.S. Department of Defense's (DOD) Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defense (JPEO-CBRND)'s Joint Project Manager, Nuclear Biological Chemical Contamination Avoidance (JPM-NBC CA) to be one of the suppliers to design and engineer an Aerosol and Vapor Chemical Agent Detector (AVCAD). Rep. Lowey Introduces Bill to Provide Relief for Hurricane, Natural Disaster Victims. The bill would authorize $12.1 billion in emergency spending, including $3.0 billion for infrastructure and economic and community development, $2.5 billion for resiliency funding to mitigate damage from future disasters that are accelerating in number due to climate change, $1.9 billion in assistance to farmers and rural communities, and $1.5 billion for the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs to repair and reconstruct damaged facilities.  (Homeland Preparedness News, 1/9/19)
