Preparing For Lent
by Fr. Ted
It’s time to take your Christmas tree down. No, really. It’s time. Many Episcopalians view keeping the tree up through Epiphany as a badge of honor. Those who leave it up through the Feast of the Presentation say, “If it’s good enough for the royal family, it’s good enough for me.” If you just want to celebrate the incarnation by keeping the tree up for the entire Season after Epiphany, then more power to you. There’s nothing wrong with any of these choices. But that all needs to end on Tuesday. In the next few days, the liturgical year will shift from incarnation to passion, so I’m afraid the tree has got to go.
This Sunday is the moment in the church calendar when the incarnation cycle (Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany) meets the resurrection cycle (Lent, Holy Week, and Easter.) This Sunday is the Last Sunday after the Epiphany. This Sunday, we remember the moment when Christ’s dual-nature was made manifest in the most awe-inspiring way: the transfiguration. Burying One Word ... Illuminating Another
Alleluia! We do not use it at church during Lent. We do not use it at home. We let it rest until its joyous return at Easter when we proclaim "He is risen!." Join us Shrove Tuesday when we physically bury the Alleluia. This ritual practice is especially delightful and meaningful for children. Children will have an opportunity to decorate and bury the Alleluia during the pancake supper. We hope you will join us!
As we bury one word we invite all children of the parish to join us on Wednesdays in Lent beginning March 1 to create our own version of The Saint John’s Bible. Children will use scripture to create their own beautiful art and illuminations. We will combine all our works in to one collection to share with the congregation and use during Children’s Chapel.
Our older Youth will engage in creating poems, devotions, and prayers based on Lenten readings from The Saint John’s Bible.
Childcare will be available during our Wednesday evening activities but registration is needed so we can prepare.
For full details on all offerings for Children, Youth, and Adults and to register for Childcare visit our Lenten Page.
