Preparing Our Schools for the Upcoming School Year

Dear Mt. Pleasant Community,

I hope you are enjoying the summer!

We thank all students and staff who made our Academic Program and Summer Camp a success this summer! We had 470 students participate in our Academic Program with Literacy, Extended School Year, and ELEVATE Math and Computer Science Innovate (CSI) classes. Bay Area Tutoring Association provided support, and the smiles on students' faces reflected the engagement found in our classrooms.

All of our students were immersed in collaborative, problem-solving activities daily. For example, our CSI classes were in STEM-project mode, creating board games in CSI 201 and light bots in CSI 202. The students' projects are fantastic! Overall, the Academic Program continued student growth toward a successful return to classes in August.

Our Computer Science Innovate (CSI) classes and 6th grade ELEVATE math classes enjoyed interacting with two guest speakers from PayPal as they described their journey toward their careers. Our Lawrence Hall of Sciences assemblies, “Shocking Natures of Wildfires,” also provided an engaging and educational experience!

Our Summer Camp served about 179 students, and included opportunities for all participants to have fun and develop skills. The program consisted of three main components: lego robotics, art, and activities involving technology. We partnered up with East Side Community Arts; they brought out different activities to share with the students, such as drumming, scrapbooking, creative storytelling, and writing, while also offering discovery days where students had structured play, team building, guest speakers, and performers. We also enjoyed a mini carnival, water days, a BMX show, and a field trip to Calibunga!

At the same time, we are working hard to advance district facility improvements so that our schools are ready to welcome students, staff, and families when the new school year begins on Thursday, August 22, 2024.
