Preparing for 2024
Lets Get Busy !

“We can no longer be spectators with wildfire prevention; we are all responsible to be participants in being fire proactive to keep our community safe.” Kim George, Fire Marshal, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue.

IF YOU would like to become more active please contact us at fire@tahoercd.org.
FAC Updates
We hope everyone is safe and prepared for this weekends winter blizzard.

The FAC team and our local fire districts have been busy with outreach: connecting with parents and students at PTA and High School club presentations; and creating new outreach videos with 'Outside TV' starring our very own Neighborhood Leaders and fire district staff. It takes a village!

Take some time this week to check out the new Fire Adapted Communities calendar and let us know if you have any upcoming 'workdays' that you would like to add for the 2024 season.

The FAC team is hiring! If you are interested check out the job listing and apply to Tahoe RCD.

We have many new FAC neighborhoods joining us this season including; Cathedral Heights, Dollar Hill, Sierra House Tract, Kekin. If you would like to connect with the new leaders to provide advise and assistance please contact Michelle directly.

Fire Adapted Communities
Did You Know?
NEIGHBORHOOD LEADERS
The Tahoe Network of Fire Adapted Communities aka FAC is lead by Tahoe Resource Conservation District and our local fire districts to help communities prepare for wildfire and better exist, adapt and build resiliency within the Tahoe Basin.

Our mission is; to create basin-wide preparedness at Lake Tahoe by fostering neighborhoods that are self-sufficient, engaged, and sustainably adapted to living with fire.

Neighborhood Leaders as community members are central to succeeding in our efforts. Without YOU the program cannot exist.

What do Neighborhood Leaders Do ?
You are the main contact and lead for your neighborhood. Leaders help to mobilize their neighborhoods to collectively prepare for wildfire and become sustainably adapted to living in a fire-prone landscape.

Throughout the year you work to complete a number of community activities which focus on wildfire education and outreach of 1. Defensible Space, 2. Home Hardening and 3. Evacuation.

What are the first steps to create a FAC Neighborhood ?
Once you have met with the Outreach Coordinator and became a member of the program with a designated neighborhood you will:

  • Create a contact email list of all of your neighbors, initiate a Facebook Group Page and/or post flyers to communicate your efforts and unite and inform your neighborhood

  • Provide a 'Meet and Greet' opportunity to educate neighbors, review the program and hand out wildfire prevention publications provided by Tahoe RCD

  • Organize and run your first workday. The workday is the key element of our programming where neighbors work as a community to collectively reduce vegetation and fire hazards around their home focusing on defensible space and home hardening. Home hardening is the process of preparing your home for wildfire embers by addressing its most vulnerable components and retrofitting them with fire-resistant building materials.

If you are interested in becoming a Neighborhood Leader review the Neighborhood Leader Handbook, contact Tahoe RCD and we can start working with you to prepare your neighborhood.

MEET Kim George
Fire Marshall, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue
I moved to South Lake Tahoe in 1998 while in paramedic school. I wanted a chance to live in the snow before finishing my education and starting full time work. But I ended up employed by SLTFR in 2001 and have been here ever since!

I have been married to my husband, Matt George for sixteen years.  We have two teenage boys named Odie and Tyler and two dogs named Remy and Cain (after Giants pitcher, Matt Cain).

I love South Lake Tahoe and am happy to be doing everything I can to ensure our community is educated on fire safety and their defensible space responsibilities. We all need to do our part and complete the work that needs to be done to keep fire risk low so we can continue to enjoy this incredibly beautiful place we call home.
Community Involvement
Building on our connections and existing relationships to make a BIG difference:

  • Invite friends to one of our Neighborhood Leader meetings
  • Check out our most recent meeting notes to get up-to-date FAC news
  • Assist with Public Outreach at our local schools and have fun while educating the younger generation in FAC
  • Write an article for the FAC newsletter

Contact Michelle for more information on any of the above or Firewise: mmclean@tahoercd.org or (530) 543- 1501 ext 114
