SPREADING SPRING EXCITEMENT

It's hard to think of spring color with the current weather in Central Oregon. If you want your garden to be one of the first on the block to color up, keep these early spring blooming options in mind.

CISTENA PLUM

The showy, fragrant flowers on this shrub are followed by beautiful burgandy foliage. 4-6 ft. tall and 4-5 ft. wide.

BASKET OF GOLD

This hardy perennial is a great one for rock gardens or naturalized hillsides.

CREEPING PHLOX

A wonderful perennial that covers the ground with masses of flowers. Great for borders.

CRABAPPLE

A real stunner! This hardy ornamental tree comes in a variety of colors from soft pink to dark pink or white.

TIME TO START THINKING ABOUT DESIGNING YOUR LANDSCAPE

This lingering winter chill has us dreaming of spring projects in the yard.

Landsystems Nursery offers consultation and design services for all of your landscaping needs.

Consultations with Gary can include onsite discussions of all things plants, landscape, xeriscape, hardscape, turf and irrigation.

Landsystems also offers landscape design services utilizing visual imaging technology. This service is not part of the consultation offering, even though the process starts with a consultation. Digital pictures of your site are taken and entered into our software. We then design the landscape area with visual imaging.

NEW 2023 SEEDS HAVE ARRIVED!

YEAR OF THE BROCCOLI

The National Garden Bureau has named 2023 the Year of the Broccoli. Each year the NGB selects a crop for North America that is easy to grow with great genetic diversity.

Did you know?

  • The optimal storage life of freshly harvested broccoli is 21 - 28 days.
  • Broccoli has more protein than most other green vegetables.
  • The US ranks 3rd in the world for top broccoli export.

You are in luck! Broccoli is relatively easy to grow in Central Oregon. We carry many hardy varieties.

YOU CAN GET A JUMP START ON SPRING BY PLANTING SEEDS INDOORS

Growing your own veggies from seed lets you know every step of your food's journey from seed to plate. Before you start buying seeds, assess your area and get a realistic idea of what will succeed in your space. Do you know how much sunlight your garden gets? Most vegetables and many ornamental flowers require at minimum 6 hours of full sun daily. Next, consider the size of your garden - just how big will those plants be when they mature? Keeping these things in mind will help insure a successful harvest.

WHEN TO START SEEDS INDOORS? Check the seed packets for "days to germination" and when your plants will be ready to transplant. Don't start your seeds too early or your seedlings may grow weak and leggy.

GET GROWING! You will need seed growing supplies such as seed flats and seed starting soil. Check with the nursery to see all the gardening equipment available.

PLANTING YOUR SEEDLINGS. Make sure you "harden off" the young plants before putting them outside. This means gradually adjusting them to the outdoors by sitting them in a sheltered, sunny area outside for a few hours each day, and gradually increasing the amount of time and light exposure for 7-10 days.

GOOD GROWING FROM THE GROUND UP

Adding organic materials improves the ability of sandy soils such as ours to hold nutrients and water.

NOW IS A GREAT TIME TO GET YOUR VEGETABLE GARDEN READY FOR GROWING.

We recommend adding a 2-3 inch layer of Gardener & Bloome Harvest Supreme over the planting area. Mix into the first 5-6 inches of soil with a spade, hoe, or rototiller. Harvest Supreme is an all-organic natural compost containing 15% composted chicken manure, bat guano, worm casting and kelp meal.

FEED YOUR TREE AND SHRUB SOIL

Gardener & Bloome Soil Building Compost is a nutrient-rich, all-natural organic compost containing forest humus, chicken manure, bat guano, worm castings, kelp meal, and gypsum. Cover the soil surface 1-3 inches deep around your plants and trees. Mulching with this product helps reduce watering needs while adding valuable nutrients.

REVITALIZE YOUR LANDSCAPE

Let our experienced team freshen up your landscape with fresh bark mulch.

Jeff, his crew and our bark blower truck can make your garden look brand new!
