Preparing for 2023-2024

Parent corner password: lions18

School supplies:
School supplies are on us! We will be discontinuing the use of EPI and/or providing parents with supply lists for the upcoming year.

Beginning in 2023-2024, student classroom supplies and materials will be provided by the school.

Uniforms:
Uniform reminders! Beginning next year, we will have two approved suppliers for GMLS uniforms: Lands’ End and French Toast. Please remember that all items (tops, bottoms, and outerwear) must be approved uniform items and embroidered with the SDJA logo. Uniforms are required from the first day of school. We will continue to provide updated discount codes during our summer mailings.
Spirit-Wear:
Spirit-wear T-shirts can be worn on Fridays, and SDJA sweatshirts can be worn daily.

Our spirit-wear pop-up store will be open from July 17 - August 1st.

Summer reading:
Our third through fifth-grade students participate in our summer reading program, which has three main objectives: student engagement, shared experience, and meaningful connections to upcoming curricular content.

As we bring on our new literacy curriculum, Core Knowledge Language Arts, our summer reading choices will complement the learning students will dive into in August.

  • Rising Third Graders will read Rules by Cynthia Lord
Our third graders will examine classic tales focusing on fictional narratives, character analysis, and point of view. They’ll go on adventures with memorable characters as they explore the themes of friendship, loyalty, hospitality, and responsibility.

  • Rising Fourth Graders will read Save Me a Seat by Sarah Weeks
  • Rising Fifth Graders will read Fish In A Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt

Our fourth and fifth graders will begin the year examining personal narratives, consisting of nonfiction works written by first-person narrators. They will build their knowledge of descriptive language, understand elements of the genre, and use that knowledge to write real events from the first-person point of view.

The novels chosen for our third through fifth-grade summer reading program are part of these larger thematic units and will provide students with shared experiences to begin rich, meaningful discussions with their classmates when they return to school in August.
