Black (Presbyterian) History Month February is Black History Month and DCPC always take this opportunity to spotlight the ministries of black Presbyterians throughout the history of Presbyterianism in the United States. One of the best ways to learn about these Presbyterians is the website for the Presbyterian Historical Society.

Katie Geneva Cannon was the first Black woman ordained a minister of word and sacrament in the Presbyterian Church. She was born in 1950 in the Fisher Town neighborhood of Kannapolis, N.C., one of the seven children of Corine and Esau Cannon. She graduated from Barber-Scotia College (Concord, N.C.), completed a Doctor of Divinity at Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary, and was the first African American to complete a Doctor of Philosophy at Union Theological Seminary (New York, N.Y.). She was ordained by the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. Presbytery of Catawba in 1974. A founding voice in Womanist theology, Cannon taught at Temple University, and Union Presbyterian Seminary (Richmond, Va.). In 2018 she founded the Center for Womanist Ethics at Union in Richmond; she died August 8, 2018.

Over 450 sermons, lectures, and writings by The Rev. Dr. Cannon's work has now been digitized and is available at the Presbyterian Historical Society's website.

Lenten Dinners and Devotionals Join members and friends of DCPC on Wednesdays in Lent for dinner and/or devotionals, February 25th through March 25th. The buffet line opens at 5:45 and closes by 6:45. The devotionals are led by the pastors and they are from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m., also in the Congregation House. We are studying “An Unlikely Lent: the extraordinary people of the Easter story” by Rachel Billups. This study is led by all of the pastors and includes a contemplative, lectio divina track (see below). The cost for dinner is: Free for children under 3, $5 for children 3 through 5th grade, and $10 for anyone in 6th grade or beyond. $30 family maximum. Click the button above or call the church office to sign up. You need to sign up for the dinner and/or the devotional separately.

For those who are looking for something other than a study for the devotional time, try lectio divina. Lectio Divina or Divine Reading is a spiritual practice that focuses on the reading, meditation, prayer and contemplation of biblical texts. Unlike a Bible study, it is a way of reading scripture devotionally in order to foster a deeper relationship with God.
