When someone you love is experiencing a mental illness, like depression or anxiety, it can be difficult to know what to do to support them. You want to say the right thing. There are some things we may say that are not helpful: 1. Everything happens for a reason—when we are suffering it is difficult to make sense of how we feel. 2. God won’t give you more than you can handle—your version of what “handle” means may be different. And 3. Maybe God is testing you—We are taught that God is loving and compassionate. God deliberately causing your friend to suffer may turn that friend away from God.
So, what can we say to be supportive? How about, 1. I am sorry you are suffering—lets your friend know you acknowledge their pain without judgement. 2. Can I pray with you?—your friend may be having trouble praying in the midst of their pain so you can add that you will say the words and they can listen. And 3. I am here with you—sometimes when we suffer it is hard to feel support. By staying with your friend in person or electronically perhaps they will feel they are not alone.
It is important to know your limits as a friend and help your friend get professional help when needed.
