Feb 6, 2025, 4:30 - 6:30pm Get trained to be an RRN Observer in case of ICE actions.

Show up to potential ICE actions to protect the rights of our undocumented neighbors.

Join the Rapid Responder Network in Santa Clara County

From Nicholas Hurley, Ruling Elder at Stone Church of Willow Glen and Candidate under Care of the Presbytery:

I trained as a responder with the RRN in 2017, during Trump’s first term in office. During that time, I received a few calls from the network, but never witnessed any actual ICE activity. However, this past Monday (January 27) at 7:27am, I got a text alert that ICE agents were present at a grocery store in my neighborhood. I, along with four other volunteer legal observers, showed up and documented the behavior of the agents as they were gathering in the loading dock of the grocery store.

Though the agents eventually left without picking anyone up, the RRN used the information we gathered to keep track of ICE activities, and to help calm some of the fears of our immigrant community. For me, this is a tangible expression of love for our immigrant neighbors — a way to show them that we have their backs when they are afraid. I hope you will be able to join me in expressing this love by joining the RRN training online on February 6.

About APW

Resources: caring for vulnerable communities

By Amanda Craft, Manager, Immigration Advocacy, Interim Unified Agency, PC(USA)

The Stated Clerk of the General Assembly and Executive Director for the Interim Unified Agency and the Co-Moderators of the General Assembly issued a joint statement. You may read the statement here. The statement highlights the intersectionality of harmful political decisions across communities and reminds us of our call to solidarity.

Church Response - You will want to be in contact with local immigration deportation defense attorneys, civil rights attorneys, and criminal defense attorneys. We are not any of these things, but we are actively working with legal professionals to create resources for congregations. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) action is contextual. Each state, each city, each county will experience enforcement in different ways and the responses of the surrounding community will also differ. Religious institution are also unique. We are endeavoring to create a resource that is a bit more general to work across the country but also include information pertinent to religious communities. We encourage you to look over resources provided on the Office of Immigration Issues website – Family Care Plan – to map out how to keep individuals safe. Many of those links will connect you with organizations that can offer more information about Know Your Rights. Teresa and I are also available for consultations to help guide churches with important questions to consider as you plan. If you would like to schedule a consultation, please let me know.

A resource that might be helpful is provided by the National Immigration Law Center - https://www.nilc.org/resources/factsheet-trumps-rescission-of-protected-areas-policies-undermines-safety-for-all/.

The Immigrant Legal Resource Center has created a Know Your Rights training toolkit for California. https://www.ilrc.org/sites/default/files/resources/kyr_cal_train_trainer_tool-20180626.pdf. Throughout the resource they suggest working with local partners and the legal professionals (those with expertise in civil rights and criminal law). I would suggest reaching out to ILRC to possibly connect you with those individuals.
