ATTENTION: Moderators and/or Clerks of Sessions:
Greetings & Happy New Year! I hope you all had blessed Nativity celebrations! It’s just about Epiphany, which means it is time for session clerks to do the Annual Statistical Report for the General Assembly.
While I know it can be a hassle, the stat report is one of the ways we stay connected to each other as a denomination; it gives an annual snapshot of of where we are, so we may better and more realistically move into the future together.
Congregations can begin filing their Session Annual Statistical Reports (SASRs):
Statistical Reports are due by February 10, 2025.
Please email me if you have any questions, need help, or can’t remember your log-in information. My personal email is best.
I look forward to working with you all throughout this Statistical Report Season.
In Christ,
Paul Rack
Stated Clerk, The Presbytery of Cayuga-Syracuse

Celebrating the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
PC(USA) national staff hears words of comfort from Dr. Dianna Wright, who directs Ecumenical and Interreligious Relations
Ahead of the Saturday start of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, Dr. Dianna Wright spoke during Wednesday’s online Chapel Service on the importance of people of faith declaring both “I believe” and “we believe.”
Wright, the PC(USA)’s Director of Ecumenical and Interreligious Relations, used John 11:17-27 as the text for her homily during worship. That’s the passage provided by the World Council of Churches in its resource “Do you believe this?” designed to help Christian faith communities around the world seek unity, both in the week to come and throughout the year. The brothers and sisters of the Monastic Community of Bose in northern Italy prepared the resource.
Colleagues throughout the Interim Unified Agency joined Wright in leading online worship for more than 40 PC(USA) national staff members. This year marks the 1,700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea, the first ecumenical council of the Christian church, which produced The Nicene Creed.

Now that Epiphany is over, it’s time for preachers to think about Lenten sermons
The Synod of the Covenant offers a helpful webinar
Presbyterian preachers looking ahead to nailing down their Lenten sermon topics were rewarded this week during the Synod of the Covenant’s monthly preaching workshop, offered this month by the synod’s executive, the Rev. Dr. Chip Hardwick.
Appearing on the webinar from his home, Hardwick noted his Christmas decorations are still up, “and yet it’s already time to start thinking about Lent,” he said, launching the Preparing for Lent 2025 workshop attended by nearly 30 people. Hardwick helped webinar participants get up to speed on the coming Lenten season, which starts with Ash Wednesday on March 5, by playing a recording of “What Wondrous Love” sung by the St. Olaf Choir.
He began by asking participants — frequent preachers in faith communities within the synod as well as preachers serving in other places — about a favorite Lenten memory. One participant recalled his college years, when some of his fraternity brothers gave up beer for Lent. The problem from this preacher’s perspective was they decided to substitute hard liquor for beer. “I told them they weren’t quite grasping the idea of sacrifice for Lent,” he quipped.
Another recalled participating in the musical “Celebrate Life!” during his youth. Hardwick had the same experience growing up. “We saw the impact it had on people during the Lenten season,” the participant explained. It also made an impact on the young singers, he said.
