'SERVICE BEGINS WHEN WORSHIP ENDS' | |
|
UCF members participate in
Intergenerational Church in the World Sunday
United Church of Fayetteville participates in service projects throughout the year, but also plans a time when the Outreach Committee identifies several mission endeavors for the congregation to do as small groups on one day. After an abbreviated worship time on World Communion, 29 people of all ages participated in four outreach endeavors to go out to serve or as one of our saints.
The Diaper Bank brigade put their hands together to bundle 1,650 diapers into groups of 25 for distribution by the Syracuse Diaper Bank. A beautiful 70-degree day saw an Adopt-a-Highway crew enjoy the bonus fall day while picking up others’ debris! The F-M Food Pantry received a good scrubbing by our UCF Clean Team. Volunteers visited the Samaritan Center to serve the afternoon meal and their jobs included all parts of the dishwashing process, coffee and water serving.
The church thanks all the volunteers for their time and hard work!

New video series on ‘Copyrights in Worship’ now
PC(USA) staff address respecting creators when honoring our Creator
By Beth Waltemath
Presbyterian News Service
“Our use of language, symbols and cultural forms in Christian worship is founded on the gift of Jesus’ incarnation,” said the Rev. Dr. David Gambrell, quoting the Book of Order (W-1.0301), in his opening for a video addressing copyright issues in worship. The same passage in the Book of Order later states, “Through Jesus Christ, we may speak truthfully to God and lift up our hearts with gratitude.” The video, “Copyrights in Worship: Words,” is the second in a series of six short videos produced by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) through a collaboration between its Office of Theology & Worship, legal staff and Communications team.
Through his presentation addressing the use of Scripture, preaching, liturgy, hymn texts and other literary works, Gambrell, who is the PC(USA)’s associate for Worship, suggests that respecting copyrights is one of the ways we speak truthfully and with gratitude in worship.
The first video in the series, presented by PC(USA) staff attorney Emily Hord, gives an overview of copyrights and why they are necessary, what works are protected, how long they are protected, how to seek permissions and what can happen when copyrights are infringed upon. The video touches on how, for people of faith, respecting copyrights is to love God and neighbor and honoring that “the creation of an original work requires a great deal of time and effort.”

Not by offerings alone: New strategies for sustainable ministry, good stewardship
Stewardship Kaleidoscope keynoter shows ways that ‘God is alive and active’
By Nancy Crowe
Special to Presbyterian News Service
Grace Pomroy speaks at Stewardship Kaleidoscope in Portland, Oregon, on Sept. 24. The annual conference is presented by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. (Photo by Gregg Brekke)
Grace Pomroy took her position as director of the Stewardship Leaders Program at Luther Seminary in Saint Paul, Minnesota with joy. When she entered the building, it was empty except for two people — one wearing a makeshift mask and rubber gloves. Papers to be signed were shoved back and forth down a long table.
It was March 2020.
“The pandemic was one of the darkest times in my faith journey,” Pomroy told those gathered in a plenary session at Stewardship Kaleidoscope Sept. 24 in Portland, Oregon. The annual conference is presented by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
The Covid news kept getting worse. Then George Floyd was murdered in her community.
“All I wanted was for the God of the Bible to show up,” she said. Teaching future pastors while experiencing her own dark night of the soul felt increasingly uncomfortable.
