| Shall We Practice Jubilee? | |
The Social Justice Committee has invited the Rev. Ashley DeTar Birt of the Center for Jubilee Practice to join the Presbytery’s upcoming stated meeting for a time of discussion and conversation.
During the meeting, Rev. DeTar Birt will lead a discussion and Q&A titled “Shall We Practice Jubilee?” Following the stated meeting, she will offer a 90-minute workshop exploring restorative practices and ways the church can address historic and present-day harm. The workshop may also fulfill the anti-racism training requirement described in the Book of Order. The session will be recorded and made available for a wider showing to the Presbytery.
The Center for Jubilee Practice was founded in partnership with the Presbytery of Utica and Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary. The Center works with churches, mid-councils, and Christian organizations seeking to explore their legacy of liberation and develop restorative communal practices. Its work encourages churches to examine assumptions of Christian, cultural, racial, patriarchal, heteronormative, and cisnormative dominance while developing concrete tools for creating more equitable communities.
Rev. DeTar Birt serves as Program Manager for New York Unitarian Universalist Justice and is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA). She holds a Master of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary, an MA in Theater Arts from the University of Pittsburgh, and a BA in Creative Writing from Carnegie Mellon University. She has been active in LGBTQIA+ advocacy within the PC(USA), including service with ACQ+E and previous work with the Racial Equity Advocacy Committee and the Disparities Experienced by Black Women and Girls Task Force. She is also a former Co-Moderator of the Board of Directors of More Light Presbyterians and has written for several faith and justice organizations.
Ashley lives in the Bronx with her wife, Rev. Emily DeTar Birt, on Munsee Lenape land.
The Social Justice Committee is excited to introduce Ashley to our presbytery. To learn visit the Center for Jubilee Practice's website.

| Focus and Coordination Team | |
Greetings in the name of Christ. Firstly, we wish to apologize for not sending more regular updates on the work that is being done by this team. Although we have been meeting throughout the summer months our meetings have been less regular and unevenly attended due to vacation schedules. We realized at our last meeting we were long overdue with an update and we pledge to do better as we move into the fall months.
Perhaps our biggest news to share is the grant we submitted to the Synod in May to help offset the costs of hiring a Merger Coordinator was approved. The Synod granted us $45,000 to assist in this hiring and has provided us with a representative to resource us. By the time this update reaches you we suspect the job description will have been shared with both presbyteries, surrounding presbyteries as well as other advertising outlets.
Based on the success of our last combined presbytery wide gathering we have begun planning another gathering. We are hopeful this can happen in 2026; stay tuned for details.
The Focus & Coordination Team has realized the importance of meeting with each Committee, Commission and “Leadership Team/Council” to hear their perceptions of the challenges and opportunities of a merger between the two presbyteries. These meetings are in the process of being conducted and we look forward to hearing their insights. We trust they will provide valuable information as we journey down this road together.
There have been some changes in the make-up of the Focus and Coordination Team so we wanted to list the members. If additional changes occur, we will be sure to convey this to you.
Staff Members:
- Rev. Dr. Greg Garis, Lead Presbyter for CS/SV,
- Rev. Mary Anderson, Asst. to the Lead Presbyter
Members from Cayuga Syracuse:
- Rev. Karen Chamis
- Rev. Lorrie Cooney
- RE Steve Eidt
- Rev. Adam Demetris
Members from Susquehanna Valley:
- CRE Libby Cudmore
- Rev. David Johnson
- RE Jeff Smith
- RE Robbie-Jean Rice
Please reach out to any of the members with any questions or input,
In Christ’s Service,
Focus & Coordination Team

PC(USA) perspectives on AI
PC(USA) leaders and members share how faith, fear, hope and discernment shape their approach to artificial intelligence.
At the 2026 AI & Church Summit, Presbyterians from across the church gathered with leaders in other denominations to wrestle with what artificial intelligence means for ministry, community and Christian witness. Rather than offering a single verdict for or against AI, the gathering invited honest testimony from people whose lives, land and vocations are already being shaped by emerging technologies.
In these four short interviews, participants describe what makes this gathering distinctive, how AI is received in communities already vulnerable to technological harm, why young people carry trauma from social media into their views of AI and how the church might engage these tools without outsourcing its calling. Their testimonies offer a representative, though not exhaustive, glimpse of how PC(USA) leaders and members are discerning AI together.
Their perspectives are representative but not exhaustive of the conversations unfolding across the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

Reading Scripture together is both faithful and fun
Rabbi Caryn Broitman appears on ‘A Matter of Faith: A Presby Podcast’
Rabbi Caryn Broitman, whose “The Torah is an Open Book: Radical Readings for the Seeker and the Skeptic” was published last month, told the hosts of “A Matter of Faith: A Presby Podcast” that it’s important and productive for Jews — as it is for other people of other faiths — to study Scripture together.
“It’s actually an ancient thing in Judaism,” Broitman, the rabbi at Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center, told “A Matter of Faith” hosts the Rev. Lee Catoe and Simon Doong during a 53-minute conversation that can be heard here. “We study texts often in pairs, going back and forth and then bringing it before the larger community. In our community we study it during our Saturday morning service.”
“It feels like it unfolds in a different way when you have all those voices,” voices that are “often contradictory, and you can’t have them all be literally true,” she said. “But what they do is unearth a different truth and together you come to something deeper.”
