We Gather Together: Notes in Transition
Dear friends,
We look forward to gathering next week, on Tuesday, February 12, for our winter stated meeting, which is being held at Guilford Park Presbyterian Church in Greensboro. We will worship together and enjoy fellowship renewed. Important matters lie before us, from the report of the Dream Team and a decision on its recommendations to the reception of new colleagues in ministry. A special guest will be
Ray G. Jones III
,
Associate Director/ Acting Director
of Theology, Formation and Evangelism
for the Presbyterian Mission Agency.
We have big decisions before us. To borrow from something I wrote a few months ago, when I commented on questions before us, I counsel us to be careful in how we register feelings about some of these matters. It's a time when we will seek to be considerate even of those with whom we disagree. As the prayer attributed to St. Francis has it, "Grant that I may not seek to be understood as to understand."
For us to quote scripture to one another may seem presumptuous, but here goes (again): "We, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members of one another. ... Love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor" [Rom. 12:5, 10]. May the Spirit of God be at work in our reflections, in our conversations, in our exchanges on the floor of presbytery - and in our decisions.
I am convinced that God has not given up on the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). I believe God has great things in store for Salem Presbytery. We hear God's call, and we have a commission from the Risen Christ to tell good news to the whole creation. Let us pray, and let us consider carefully how God is calling us to respond to opportunities and needs before us.
Grace and peace!
Steve
