Presbytery of Baltimore Hosts 881st Gathering
|
|
Nearly 100 members of the Presbytery of Baltimore attended its 881
st
Gathering on Saturday, Nov. 10 at Central Presbyterian Church in Towson. The Stated Meeting was held in conjunction with Presbyterian Learning Day, which featured worship and an array of workshops focused on the theme “Kindom: Families in the Family of God.” Read further for highlights about the Gathering.
The Presbytery recognized the transition of several members: former Associate Deborah Milcarek, who now serves as General Presbyter of the Hudson River Presbytery in upstate New York; the Rev. Judy Johnson, who retired from her long-time position as staff liaison to the Wild, Wild West Ministry Group; and, The Rev. Harold (Harry) Cahill, who retired after more than two decades as pastor of Babcock Presbyterian Church in Towson.
- The Rev. Carrie Finch-Burriss, Chair of the Committee on Local Arrangements for the 224th General Assembly to be held in Baltimore in 2020. See video here!
- The Presbytery distributed Shared Ministry information to churches, some of which was chronicled in a 2018 video presentation from Ministry Groups. (See below)
- General Presbyter Jacqueline Taylor discussed staff changes and the reactivation of a Staff Rationale Team. She pointed out that getting membership on committees should be helped by the trend of offering “virtual” meetings.
- The Presbytery approved a motion by The Baltimore Dakota Learning Camp Steering Committee to honor our indigenous brothers and sisters at all future official gatherings, which will include acknowledging the indigenous people who once lived on the land where the Presbytery meeting is taking place.

Scholarships for Undergraduates Discerning a Call to Ministry
Is there a young person in your congregation with a mature faith and growing leadership skills? Perhaps he or she is sensing a call to Christian ministry.
At Randolph-Macon College, we are assisting students who are discerning a lifetime of service to God through the church. We help them keep college costs manageable and offer opportunities to begin preparing for ministry even before seminary.
Randolph-Macon College's
A. Purnell Bailey Pre-Ministerial Scholarship
offers half-tuition during a student’s freshman and sophomore years at R-MC and full-tuition during the junior and senior years. The Bailey Program includes weekly meetings for vocational discernment, creating a strong, supportive peer group. During a student’s tenure in the program, there are many opportunities to visit with Theology School representatives, spend time with persons in a variety of professional ministry roles, and reflect on a personal sense of call. There are two internship opportunities, one for academic credit and one with a financial stipend.
Online Bailey Scholar applications are being accepted now, with a deadline of February 1, 2019. The program is open to Christian students of any denomination or Christian tradition. Learn more at
