Lighting the Barbie Candle
|
|
|
"It’s so pink that it could be called the Barbie candle, especially among children whose liturgical vocabularies are still a work in process. They giggle and squeal as we light the pink candle, which to me becomes the sound of a weary world rejoicing..."

I Broke My Candy Cane
(A Metaphor for a Challenging Season)

"...From a distance, it still looked put together, like a perfect candy cane, only broken upon closer inspection..."

The first Guns to Gardens Recycle event was held at Webster Groves Presbyterian Church parking lot on Saturday, December 9, 2023 from 10:30 am - 1:30 pm. Guns to Gardens is based on the Bible verse Isaiah 2:4 “They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.” Guns are surrendered in a drive-through process and dismantled on-site before the people drive out of the parking lot. A pastoral care station as well as a hospitality station were available to those surrendering their guns as part of the drive-through process. The metal pieces of the surrendered guns are then taken to a blacksmith who melts the metal to create garden tools or garden art. Eleven guns were received and chopped up on Saturday.

|
The Guns to Gardens event was co-sponsored by the GLPBY Public Witness team and the DRAWP team. Guns to gardens is one way we implement the position of the Presbyterian Church which calls for sensible firearm regulations to save lives. This will be a twice-yearly event with the next G2G taking place as part of Wear Orange For Gun Violence Awareness and Prevention weekend activities in Webster Groves June 7-9, 2024.

Tips For Earth-Friendly Holidays:
Give "Green" Gifts for Adults
Consider giving friends or family "experimental" presents....such as gift certificates for restaurants, movies, plays, concerts, yoga classes, spa services, or even weekend getaways. Or give nature lovers a national park pass or membership to a botanical garden or aquarium.
"TIPS" is brought to you by the Earth Care Work Group of Presbytery which monitors the ten Earth Care Congregations of Presbytery and advocates for low-income, indigenous, people of color, and GLBTQ communities, often harmed first and most by climate degradation.
