Rev. Doug Mankell
Honorably Retired
"On the first day of school in August of 1960, a large angry crowd had gathered outside the school, yelling racial epithets and throwing things at the four Marshals who were surrounding Ruby. The next day the angry crowd followed the same pattern."

History Team Highlights
Pacific Presbyterian Church
Pacific, Missouri
By Julie Nicolai, Presbytery History Team
Pacific Presbyterian Church was organized during the Civil War (1864) by the Presbytery of St. Louis as The Presbyterian Church of Pacific City. The first pastor was Reverend J.F. Fenton. The first services were held in member's houses, the schoolhouse on the corner of Osage and 4th Streets and at the Masonic Hall. The congregation purchased the stone Union Church at the corner of 4th and St. Louis Streets in 1867 and it was renamed Pacific Presbyterian Church. In 1880, a Sabbath School was established. In 1926, the solid oak floor was elevated a couple of feet so a basement could be built underneath. In the 1950s and 1960s, the stone exterior was covered with brick veneer, a narthex was added to the front and the sanctuary was redecorated, including the installation of stained-glass windows at a cost of $45.00 each. In addition, a new manse was constructed, and the Garrett house next door was purchased for use as a Christian education building, pastor's study and church office.

Education Hour
Sun., Apr. 10 at 7 p.m.

R. Marie Griffith, a historian of American religion at Washington University, will be the guest speaker.
Topic - She will speak to us about her timely book Making The World Over: Confronting Racism, Misogyny, and Xenophobia in U.S. History (2021), followed by Q&A. (Reading the book in advance is not required to participate.) From the publisher: “Making the World Over is Marie Griffith’s thoughtful response to an imperiled nation that has forgotten how to listen and debate productively, at a time when it needs vigorous discourse more than ever. Griffith performs the urgent work of examining the histories behind the issues at the root of our country’s conflicts both past and present, from race and immigration to misogyny and reproductive rights.”

The Art of Transitional Ministry
Sponsored by Montreat Conference Center, in cooperation with the Transitional Ministry Education Consortium.
Leading a congregation and faith community through transition is challenging and rewarding. It is recognized both in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and in other denominations as a specialized ministry. It takes knowledge, skill, resilience, and spiritual strength to navigate the waters of transition in a way that allows a congregation and its leaders to be open to possibilities, go deeper and thrive. The Art of Transitional Ministry offers education in the skills and understanding necessary for leading a congregation and faith community in transition.
There are two offerings of this course, one in-person, and one virtual. If traveling to Montreat is not the best fit for you right now, you can still experience the Art of Transitional Ministry from the comfort of your own home (or office). Participants will follow a slightly modified schedule from the participants who are in residence and will be required to do more advance preparation for the event.
Pastors Save the Dates of May 15-20
Mid-America and Lincoln Trails Synod have announced they will have Transitional Ministry Training at the Mercy Center in St Louis May 15-20, 2022. Please watch the newsletter or other direct emails for further information.
