Uprooting Hunger - 2019 Presbytery Wide Goal
Joining Hands Against Hunger
Joining Hands is a holistic international hunger ministry. The program builds bridges of solidarity between coalitions of churches in the United States and networks of overseas churches, grassroots groups and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). The focus of the program is to address the inequities and suffering resulting from the spread of globalization, through community education, advocacy, alternative economic activities, lifestyle changes and spiritual grounding. It aims at restoring the wholeness of God’s creation and the healing of the human family across faiths, races and cultures through prayer, mutual visits, humble accompaniment, repentance and mutual transformation. Visit the  Joining Hands   website to learn how your presbytery or congregation can join hands with our partners overseas.
Uprooting Hunger - Hunger Action Team
The next sixteen months the presbytery will work toward establishing Certified Hunger Action Congregations. This handout will be helpful to your congregation, as we journey together in the year + ahead. If you have any questions, email: communication@glpby.org

I'm dreaming of a Green Christmas!
Many people of faith want to continue their care for god's creation during the holidays. The presbytery's earth care action team would like to offer a few suggestions for how to experience a simpler, more environmentally-friendly, sustainable, more spiritually fulfilling holiday:

  • Slow down-Take time to meditate and center on the meaning for the season. Don't let the commercialism this time of year take you over and remember the real reason for the season!
  • Cut down on gifts-Give more eco-friendly, recycled, battery-free, homemade, and non-violent gifts. Give the gift of yourself. Simplify meals and parties. Give meaningful gifts that express love, appreciation, friendship, and caring.
  • Use eco-friendly decorations- Reduce, reuse, recycle. Choose live tree and replant or recycle after holidays. Use led Christmas lights. Avoid plastic decorations.
  • Plan earth-friendly meals-Use locally grown produce, provide vegetarian, organic, free-range options, use leftovers, and compost food scraps if possible at meals and parties.
  • Participate in holiday religious events at church and other places! And have a Merry Christ-Centered Christmas!
The Presbytery Earth Care Team brings you these tips monthly, and they welcome you to learn more about becoming a green congregation, by emailing carletonstock@aol.com

The Role of the Minister in
a Dying Congregation
The Center of for Life Learning at Columbia University will offer an online course February 1 - March 4, 2019. According to several sources, approximately 3,500 to 4,000 U.S. churches close their doors every year. In our success-driven culture the topic of dying congregations is taboo, yet that is the reality many pastors and congregations struggle through with little guidance for discernment. In The Role of the Minister in a Dying Congregation, author Woody Jenkins provides a forum and resource to church leaders for on one of the most critical issues facing congregations today: how to help a congregation conclude its ministry life cycle with dignity and meaning. Learn more here.
