My Journey to Chaplaincy
A Message from Renita Heinzl
St. Luke’s ACPE Certified Educator
& Senior Chaplain
"I had never heard of CPE, so I just chuckled to myself thinking that will never happen. But God has a sense of humor as not long thereafter I had to do a unit of CPE in order to be ordained."

Historical Highlight
by Julie Nicolai
The stone Romanesque Revival chapel of Second Presbyterian Church (1896) at 4501 Westminster Place was designed by the famous architectural firm of Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge, Boston.
It was the successor firm to the legendary H.H. Richardson, famous for the Richardsonian Romanesque Revival style of architecture. The well-known local architect, Theodore C. Link, designed additions in 1899. Some of his beloved local works include Union Station and structures for the 1904 World’s Fair. The architectural style of the Second Presbyterian Church was influenced by Richardson’s famous Trinity Church in Boston. Its stonework is reminiscent of that adorning St. Louis’ Union Station (1894). The church contains a spectacular collection of eleven stained glass windows by Tiffany Studios of New York, installed from c. 1900 to the early 1920s. Each window cost from $1,300.00 to $3,500.00.
The Second Presbyterian congregation was organized in 1838 as an offshoot of First Presbyterian Church. Its first church was built in 1840 at 5th Street (now Broadway) and Walnut Street. It was designed by St. Louis architect, Lucas Bradley. Around 1864, a conservative portion of the congregation broke away and moved to a church at 16th and Walnut Streets and became the 16th Street, or Walnut Street, Presbyterian Church. In 1867, Second Presbyterian bought a lot at 17th and Locust Streets in Lucas Place and built a church designed by the Randolph Brothers. It sported an unusual all-stone spire. The congregation moved to 4501 Westminster Place in the Central West End in 1896. Services were initially held in the 1896 chapel by Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge, which is now attached to the west end of the main church. In 1930, an education building designed by the prestigious St. Louis firm of LeBeaume & Klein was added.
