Dear Library Community,
As we continue to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Prescott Public Library on Goodwin Street, we are excited to welcome spring and the month of April with a variety of exciting programs and activities for all to enjoy. However, this month also brings with it some concerns for the future of libraries, including ours, particularly regarding funding and support both locally and nationally.
On a positive note, this month you will find us both in the library and out in the community, not only celebrating our 50th anniversary but also honoring National Library Week.
At the Library:
- Bookmark Contest for Kids: April 1-12. Public voting begins April 14. Winners will have their bookmarks printed and distributed at the Fest in the West event on May 30.
- Library Love Trees: April 6-12. Visit our trees on both floors, where you can take a book-shaped cutout and share what you love most about the library.
In the Community:
- Chamber of Commerce Visitor's Center Open House: April 4, 11 AM - 1 PM. Visit with us and other Chamber of Commerce members at the Visitor's Center at 117 E Goodwin St.
- Farmer’s Market: April 12, 8 AM - Noon. Join us in celebration of National Library Week and learn about our programs and activities leading up to our Fest in the West finale.
- Earth Day in Downtown Prescott: April 19, 9 AM - 2 PM. Join the Friends of Prescott Public Library for seed giveaways, bookmarks, and fun activities to take home.
On a more concerning note, many of you have reached out regarding the ongoing discussions about the potential loss of funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). This could have an impact in the future on the essential services and programs we provide. In addition, Prescott Public Library and other municipal libraries in the county continue to face decreases in funding from the Yavapai County tax levy that supports libraries. While these challenges are real, we remain committed to offering you the resources and services you rely on.
Hearing your stories about how this library has made a difference in your lives over the past 50 years gives us hope. We encourage you to stay informed and, if possible, advocate for continued funding and support for libraries. Your voice is vital in ensuring that libraries remain a key part of our communities.
Thank you for your continued support, and for being a cherished part of our library family.
Warm Regards,
Melissa Orr
Library Director
| | Go On An Adventure With a Library Passport |
Celebrate Prescott Public Library’s 50 years on Goodwin Street by collecting ink stamps in your Library Passport Book to commemorate your library adventures. From April 6 – May 30, passports will be available at the Ask a Librarian and Youth desks. Adults and youth can collect stamps from a library staff member by completing selected tasks.
On Friday, May 30th from 9 am - 8 pm, visit the library to redeem your passport stamps for tickets to our prize drawings. Every two stamps collected will earn 1 ticket to the drawing of your choice. Drawings include prizes for a range of ages and will take place Saturday, May 31. Winners will be contacted during the first week of June. Can’t make it to the library May 30? Two prizes (one for adults and one for youth) will be available for early entries from Sunday, May 25 through Thursday, May 29. This special passport adventure is presented with funding from the Friends of the Prescott Public Library.

| Youth Activities for National Library Week |
“Drawn to the Library” is the theme of this year’s National Library Week, and Youth Services wants to draw you in with fun activities throughout the week. First, Anna Dewdney’s beloved storybook character Llama Llama will visit Toddler Storytime on Tuesday, April 8 at 10 am and Preschool Storytime on Wednesday, April 9 at 10 am. Llama Llama will also make a special appearance at the Prescott Farmers Market on Saturday, April 12 from 9-11 am.
In addition, we are holding a Youth Bookmark Contest with the theme “Drawn to the Library!” We want to see your child’s amazing 2D art on our bookmarks! Whether they draw, paint, photograph, or make digital art, this is their opportunity to show what draws them to Prescott Public Library. Winners will be selected from three age categories: 5-9, 10-13, and 14-18. The contest is open from April 1-12 with paper entry forms available at the Youth Desk or digitally on our website.
And we are leaving the voting to you! From April 14-25, stop by the Youth area to cast your vote for your favorite entry in each age category. Winners will be announced on May 1, and our three winners will each receive a $50 prize package and have their bookmarks printed to debut at the library’s 50th Anniversary event on May 30th.

| Sharing Your Library Stories |
We asked for your library story--and you shared! Here are a couple that we received, but we want more!
"Arriving in Prescott in 1982 I immediately started to visit the library. I took my young children over the years to look for books, attend programs and participate in crafts. As they grew and needed information for school projects and homework, we depended on the library’s endless resources, before the internet existed. It was also a place I could go by myself for some quiet time to read. I now take my grandchildren for all of the same reasons and love that I’ve come full circle. The library has continued to grow and flourish in the best of ways, and I am so grateful to have it available to me in my hometown. Walking through the doors always brings a smile to my face! Thank you to everyone who works hard to make our library the absolute best!" -Anonymous
Dani writes, "I still remember the first time I stepped foot into this library, that was four years ago. The towering shelves felt endless. I spent countless hours bundled up in a booth reading to my heart's content. As I grew it because a sanctuary, a place where I discovered my love for books. I found comfort in difficult times and bonded with the community. The Prescott Public Library has shaped me in more ways than one. It's more than just a building --it's a home for imagination, learning and connection. I am forever grateful for its presence in my life."
