Presentation of Mary Academy ePathways

October 2014
October greetings PMA friends and family,

Fall has officially arrived at PMA!  We hope you will read on to catch up on just some of the great PMA happenings on campus and in our community. We are pleased to present you with the latest edition of Presentation of Mary Academy ePathways!

Around Campus
PMA Senior Discovered by Ryan Seacrest Needs Your VOTE

Television host and radio personality Ryan Seacrest, of American Idol fame, recently discovered something members of the PMA community have know for a long time: senior Irene Tarshi  is a gifted and talented musician. A YouTube featuring Irene's performance of Amnesia by the Australian band, Five Seconds of Summer was one of 13 chosen by Seacrest as part of his series of pop song cover contests.  After a week of voting,  Irene made it to the second round.   Now in the top 8, she needs your support to go further!  Fans are allowed to vote every 12 hours, please be sure to cast your votes twice a day before the final round launches on Wednesday, October 15, 2014.  Click here to vote for IRENE MUSIC!

Open Mic Night
The PMA Music and Fine Arts Department hosted an Open Mic Night on September 25, 2014.  All who attended enjoyed vocal and instrumental performances by PMA's very talented performing artists in a casual, informal setting.  Marveled Sr. Lorraine Auccoin of the evening, "The students have gifts and talents they don't even know about, and they discover them in an atmosphere full of encouragement, love, and fun!"   More Open Mic Nights will held throughout the year and should not to be missed.  For more information about future events, please contact Dave Comtois.
PMA Annual Pink Out
It's October and PMA is all about PINK.   This month, PMA's Pink Panthers Volleyball team hosted their annual PINK OUT game against Notre Dame Academy here at the Dupre Center.  They raised over $500.00 to be directed, in part, towards supporting the Greater Lawrence YWCA's effort to provide mammogram access to at-risk low-income women. This annual tradition honors the late Anne Shields, a beloved member of PMA's History Department who courageously battled breast cancer.  Later this month a "dress-down" day will be held to raise additional funds.

Introducing

Holly Saurman, Chair of PMA Board of Directors

Though her daughter Sarah graduated from PMA in 2011, Holly Saurman's involvement and commitment to PMA is stronger than ever!  She has served as a member of PMA's Board of Directors for two years and in 2014 was elected Board Chair."As a parent of an alum, I can say without hesitation that PMA helped shape my daughter into a wonderful young woman.  I will be forever grateful for experiences and friendships that she developed there."

As Chair of the Board, Holly hopes to increase community awareness of all the great things happening on campus, as well as to increase donations to support them.   "Knowing what I know as a parent of an alum, I do not see it as a responsibility, but rather 'paying it forward.' PMA's dedicated staff gave my daughter more than I could ever give back, so I will continue to try and help them when, where and however I can."

Holly and her husband George will celebrate their twenty-fourth wedding anniversary in November.  Their "wonderful children" are Sarah, now a Registered Nurse in her senior year at Rivier College, and Jonathan, a freshman at Holy Cross.  Holly has been employed as a respiratory therapist for thirty years and is presently the Director of Respiratory Therapy at Tewksbury State Hospital.

In her free time, Holly enjoys taking her canoe on a still lake and fishing.  "I love the tranquility of the water and never knowing if the next one is going to be the big one.... That goes for future donations to support the mission of PMA!"

Help Wanted

As the days become shorter and the temperatures crisp, PMA's Advancement team is already counting the days until spring. Planning is now underway for our annual online auction (April 7- April 16, 2015) and Spring Legacy Gala (April 17, 2015).   This year proceeds will be directed towards improvements to the PMA's library and media center, benefiting all our students.  Your support will ensure the success of these events.  We need event sponsors, donations of items and experienced, and volunteers to serve on our planning committee.  Please contact Sarah Hamilton to let us know you can help!
