The Standing Committee of The Episcopal Diocese of Hawaiʻi (the Episcopal churches in Hawai'i, Guam, and Saipan) joyfully announce that your Diocesan Convention has elected the Rev. Elizabeth "Libby" Berman as its sixth diocesan bishop. The election took place today, Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 'Iolani School in Honolulu.

She was elected on the second ballot (first ballot was cancelled due to technical issues), after receiving the required majority in both the clergy and lay orders, in accordance with The Constitution and Canons of The Episcopal Church and the Special Rules of Order adopted for this electing Convention.

Berman was born and grew up in Huron, South Dakota. With three generations of her monther's family on O'ahu, she fell in love with Hawai'i during her first visit at age ten. For the past six years, she has been serving as Rector of Church of the Holy Nativity in Honolulu. Berman received her Master of Divinity from Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, MA. She has over two decades of experience in congregational ministry including seven years as Canon for Congregations in the Diocese of Massachusetts. She is married to husband Mark and they have two daughters in their mid-20s, one of whom is currently teaching on O'ahu.

Acknowledgements

We extend our deep gratitude to all three candidates who offered themselves for discernment. Their willingness to share their gifts, vision, and faith with our communities across the region has been a profound blessing. We hold the candidates and their families in prayer as they continue to serve the Church with grace and dedication.

We also offer our heartfelt thanks to the Search Committee, for their faithful, prayerful, and diligent work of broad engagement and Spirit-led discernment. Their dedication has been a blessing, strengthening our shared life in Christ.

The Standing Committee further acknowledges the dedicated service of the Transitions Committee, whose leadership has been essential throughout this process. We are especially grateful for their careful planning and execution of the Ke Aloha Kākou Meet-and-Greet sessions, their coordination with congregations across the diocese, and the pastoral care they have offered to the candidates and their families.

Their work continues as they guide the diocese through the next stages of transition that includes preparations leading up to the Ka Haʻalele ʻAna farewell celebration after Education Day for Bishop Bob, and the ordination and consecration of the Bishop-Elect and the Ke Kipaʻana celebration in November.

We also thank the Elections Committee, the Credentials Committee, Dispatch of Business Committee, the Officers of the Convention, the Diocesan Support Center staff, and the many volunteers whose generous service made this special meeting possible.

We give special thanks for the leadership and pastoral presence of Bishop Robert L. Fitzpatrick, whose guidance helped ensure a smooth, orderly, and grace-filled election.

We are deeply grateful to the clergy and lay delegates, the congregations who hosted meet and greets and prayer gatherings, and all those across the diocese who upheld this process in prayer. Your faithfulness and participation embody the shared ministry of our diverse and far-flung Church.

And finally, we extend our sincere gratitude to ‘Iolani School for the generous use of their campus and for their gracious hospitality in welcoming us to the new Arrillaga Student Center.

Next Steps in the Transition

In accordance with the Canons of The Episcopal Church, the results of the election will now be submitted to the wider Church for the required canonical consents from Standing Committees and bishops with jurisdiction. Once a majority of consents are received, we will move toward the consecration of our Sixth Bishop on November 14, 2026.

As we look to the next chapter in our common life, we invite the people of The Episcopal Diocese of Hawai'i to continue praying for the Bishop-Elect, for the candidates, for their families, and for all in our diocese. May the Holy Spirit guide us in hope and unity as we prepare to welcome and support the Sixth Bishop of The Episcopal Diocese of Hawai'i.

Faithfully,

The Standing Committee
