Protecting Heritage in the Face of Disaster
In light of the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey, we wanted to highlight some resources and information specific to the protection of historic, cultural, and archaeological resources in the face of disasters.
On our office website, the Disasters and Historic Resources webpage offers a broad scope of information and materials to help prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters.
A series of articles from the National Trust for Historic Preservation provide another source of good information and advice for dealing with the impacts of disasters:
These are just some of the many resources available to help ensure as safe and successful an outcome as possible when dealing with worst case situations.

Remembering World War I 100 Years Later
California's commemoration of the World War I (WWI) Centennial continues throughout this year and the next. A number of cities and counties have issued
proclamations honoring the historic anniversary. The State Historical Resources Commission issued a
resolution at their May 10, 2017 meeting, recognizing the centennial and the work of the California World War I Centennial Task Force. Most recently, the
California State Assembly Committee on Veterans Affairs approved a
bill to go forward to the California legislature to formally commemorate the centennial statewide.
Besides recognition by governmental bodies, citizens are honoring the centennial with efforts of their own. One such undertaking involved the rediscovery and restoration of an almost forgotten World War I memorial in Los Angeles. We share here Part 1 & Part 2 of this story as shared on the site "Roads to the Great War." Have you been involved with efforts to preserve WWI memorials? Is there a WWI memorial in your community? Email us a photo along with a brief story about the memorial, and we will include it here in the pages of our ePost.
