“And now, do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life.” – Genesis 45:5

These are words spoken by the patriarch Joseph on the day that he revealed himself to the brothers who had sold him into slavery. From Potiphar’s house to prison dungeon to Pharaoh’s palace, Joseph’s life has been a “roller coaster” of emotions and experiences orchestrated by God for a purpose that was not lost on him. That purpose, which he states clearly to his brothers, is very simply this: “To preserve life.”

It is a remarkable thing to be involved in the saving and preserving of life. Medical professionals – doctors and nurses, alike – would know this. Police officers and emergency “first-responders” would as well. On less frequent occasions, average citizens find themselves in situations where immediate, and often heroic, action is required, and in the rearview mirror of their action they have the satisfaction, even the joy, of knowing that they did something “to preserve life.”

Well, few of us possess the training or the certification to perform a life-saving medical procedure, and our life circumstances may prevent us from serving as a police officer or an emergency “first-responder”. And even fewer of us would find ourselves in positions like Joseph’s where we hold the authority and power of life and death in our hands. But each one of us can be a “preserver of life” through our work for and support of Daybreak.

Each day at Daybreak, we meet individuals facing a decision where the life of their unborn child hangs in the balance. With those individuals, we share the hope of life – abundant life – through the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, for both them and their babies. It is God who is the giver of life, but in His amazing providence, He calls those who have embraced the “good news” of His Son to enjoy the privilege of being “preservers of life”, both by their direct efforts and their support of organizations like Daybreak.

In these first days of the New Year, would you join us in the call to save and preserve life?

Joseph saw this call as the very pinnacle of his life. Will you?

"I am still a fairly new resident here in Columbia. It’s been three years since my husband and I decided to move to Columbia to be closer to one of our four children and his family of seven.

"My husband and I met in San Diego, California (where I’m from), then we moved to Louisville, Kentucky (where he is from) to raise our children. Forty years later, four grown children and ten grandchildren later, we have settled in Columbia and feel very happy and blessed.

"Our son, Jacob (“Jake”) Blair, is the Pastor of Teaching and Formation at Midtown Fellowship Church in Columbia, where my husband and I attend and volunteer in the Kidtown Ministry."
