BSCHT Launched GOOD DEEDS
Preserving Homes for Big Sky Residents
|
|
Modeled after Vail’s successful InDEED program, GOOD DEED's goal is to preserve existing inventory for locals.
HOW GOOD DEEDS WORKS
Homeowners, buyers, or sellers who participate in GOOD DEEDS will receive CASH in exchange for placing a permanent deed restriction on their property, which transfers with ownership.
The restriction requires at least one of the property's occupants to work a minimum of 30 hours per week in Big Sky.

Meet BSCHT's New Executive Director
David O'Connor Starts May 1
|
|
Big Sky Community Housing Trust, the nonprofit agency devoted to creating housing options for local workers, is pleased to announce on May 1st it will have a new Executive Director, David O’Connor. David is a long time Big Sky resident with an extensive background as a local business owner (Bucks T4) and community volunteer. He has been concerned and involved with local housing strategies for decades, actively participating in the 2018 Housing Plan through the Big Sky Chamber of Commerce.
David will replace Laura Seyfang, who has been with BSCHT since its origination and has led the organization through its formation and implementation of programs like MeadowView Condominiums, RiverView Apartments, Rent Local, and the new Good Deeds Program. Laura will be remaining in Big Sky and plans to stay active in the community. Per Seyfang, “While proud of the progress the Housing Trust has made in this critical area, I am excited and confident to have David come in and take over leadership of the organization. He brings great passion and insight to address this challenging problem. I look forward to enjoying the retirement life I originally moved to Big Sky to experience.” Laura and David will be transitioning over the next months to insure a seamless transition for the Housing Trust.

Lacking a city government, Big Sky has a history of looking to The Chamber to advocate for its needs.
In 2017, hearing the community's desire to address housing issues, The Chamber initiated Big Sky Community Housing Trust.
The Chamber's mission: "Serving as the VOICE of Business, YOUR business, the Big Sky Chamber CHAMPIONS a healthy economy and works collaboratively with community stakeholders as CONVENER and a CATALYST to improve the overall quality of life in the region."

Lone Peak Lookout
"Protecting local housing for the long term"
"Always a source for creative ideas, the Big Sky Community Housing Trust (BSCHT) is rolling out a new program called Good Deeds next week. The effort is loosely based on a successful program in Vail, Colo., which essentially protects a part of the local housing market through permanent deed restrictions by offering a cash incentive to locals. . .
When people come and buy a home from out of state, they typically put it on the short-term rental market. If we don’t protect some of those houses, there’s nowhere for locals to live, explained Seyfang.
The Housing Trust has also tried to figure out how to provide down payment assistance for people over the last couple of years. They’ve struggled to figure out how to financially make that work.
Now, by buying a home with a permanent deed restriction, the Housing Trust can . . .give people cash to use as a down payment for the home."
