President Chandra's Bulletin

September 15, 2022

Fellow Rotarians!

In the spirit of service this past weekend, I had a chance to visit St. Timothy’s Catholic Church while the Knights of Columbus were holding one of their food and recycling drives. Jim McGinIey showed me around the facility.  I   was also honored to meet the current Grand Knight Steven Martinez as well as the volunteers serving breakfast, stocking their food pantry, sorting glass, plastic and aluminum cans and bottles. There was definitely sense of camaraderie among all the participants. We hope to partner more with the Knights of Columbus for some future events.

Also this past week, our featured guest speaker, Wen Chen, gave a compelling presentation about China's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and the censorship it used to enforce their policies. As the pandemic unfolded, it also became very clear just how much of the world's pharmaceutical drugs, medical equipment and other critical care products are manufactured and exported out of China. This will have significant ramifications on future U.S. - China trade policies.

President Chandra Chell

To get a comprehensive understanding of how far and wide the CCP tentacles extend throughout the world, Wen recommended the two volume "How the Specter of Communism is Ruling Our World" published by the Epoch Times.

Some of our upcoming activities and projects for this season include the renown Oktoberfest fundraiser event at Mark Montgomery’s home, participation in the Laguna Hills First Annual Heritage Day event, the sponsorship of the Military Support Committee's Taste for the Troops event, the holiday season “adopt a family” opportunities with our local non-profit partners, the Christmas Party for the young adult residents of the Glennwood Home in Laguna Beach and participation in the Laguna Niguel Holiday Parade. In addition to these club activities, there are also District sponsored events in our South County community that we will be expected to support as well.

Coming up on October 4th, we will begin meeting at the new Crown Valley Community Center. Stay tuned for additional details.

Last but not least, thank you to those members that have PAID DUES. We're finally starting to replenish our coffers.  Please make it a priority for those left to pay!

As always, we have lots of projects and events to look forward to throughout the rest of year. Please mark your calendars! We are here to serve and appreciate the time and effort our members contribute toward our community.

Yours in Service,

Chandra Chell

2022-23 President

Next Club Meeting on Friday September 16, 2022 - Honor Flight Recap with Jim McGinley & Mark Montgomery

Mark Montgomery & Jim McGinley in Washington DC with their veterans

This week, we will feature our own Jim McGinley and Mark Montgomery as they provide a recap of their Honor Flight trip taken earlier this year. The Honor Flight Network takes veterans who served during World War II, the Korean War or Vietnam to Washington D.C to visit our nation’s memorials at no cost to them. Each veteran is provided with a guardian that helps to ensure that the veteran has a safe, memorable, and rewarding experience. The primary responsibility of a Guardian is the physical safety and security of a veteran - helping up and down steps, off buses, wheeling veterans up and down ramps, and physically handling equipment and baggage. These special flights take place several times a year out of Southern California. We will get to hear about Mark and Jim’s experience while serving as guardians to these veterans that served our country more than a half a century ago. Please support them with your attendance!!
