Fellow Rotarians!
This past week, our new District Governor Dan Ouweleen paid our club his first visit. Along with Dan, we also had a few other guests serving our Rotary District 5320. This included Chief of Staff Donald Clinebell, Assistant District Governor Sheila Steinberg and Youth Chair Sally Guon.
We began our meeting with Bob Brown leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Then President-Elect Mike Gerard provided us with inspiration and John Veytia provided some humor. We announced the addition of three more board members. Ivy Leeson will serve as our new Secretary. Bruce Birkeland will serve as International Co-Chair. Marilyn Crary will serve as Community Services Chair. President Elect Mike Gerard presided over Sergeant At Arms duty. Programs Chair Mark Montgomery introduced our speaker, District Governor Dan Ouweleen.
Dan spoke about the District's goal of having Rotary go from being a "best kept secret" to becoming the most well known and appreciated service club. The District has new marketing materials including a trifold brochure and different themed postcards that are available for pickup at the District office in Orange. They also have a "District Strike Team" that can provide a booth with the Rotary canopy and materials for community events held in our respective cities.

Dan also emphasized the importance of the upcoming District Gala on October 14th at the Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach. They want each club to bring a couple of their non-profit partners so that their stories can be feature at the event. Dan also brought their latest swag, the "Do More Good" T-shirts that Rischi and Sally modeled for us. Last, but certainly not least, Dan presented our Past President, Madame Kim Douglas, with an Inspirational Leader award.
Coming up at the end of August, the City of Laguna Niguel’s Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting a 3-day festival starting Friday, August 26th through Sunday, August 28th. This end-of-summer event will include music, rides, games, food, and much more! Our club will be hosting a booth so we'll need volunteers to assist us. We'll soon have a sign-ups to man the booth for different shifts over that weekend.

We have lots of projects and events to look forward to throughout the rest of the year, so please mark your calendars!

Yours in Service,
Chandra Chell

Ben attended Camp RYLA in April 2021 when it was held virtually over a 5 evening period. Ronald Lac attended Camp RYLA earlier this year which featured a hybrid format, - two evenings online and three days in person at a camp up in the mountains. They will each share their unique Camp RYLA experience.

Volunteer & Mentor-ship Opportunity with HomeShare OC
Earlier this year, we featured Stephanie Palmer, the Program Manager for HomeShare OC. This non-profit matches senior citizens that have a spare bedroom in their home with college students in need of affordable housing. In this video, their Executive Director discusses home sharing and inter-generational connections made through these relationships. If you know a senior citizen that might want to participate in this type of mentor-ship program, please reach out to Stephanie Palmer at 714.386.6321. They are currently preparing for the Fall semester and anticipate more college students needing assistance.
