President Chandra's Bulletin

Fellow Rotarians!
This past week, we got to hear from two of our recently sponsored Camp RYLA students. They were truly inspirational and gave me hope for our future generations. Camp RYLA (Rotary Leadership Youth Awards) is held each year in the spring time over a weekend in Idyllwild. It is a leadership and team building event for the selected students that attend. Our club always sponsors two to three high school Juniors that reside within District 5320 in Orange County.
We began our meeting with Ivy Leeson leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance. John Veytia provided some humor and RoseAnne Ruccello provided us with inspiration. We announced the addition of one more board member. Taje Gill will serve as our Youth Chair. Jim McGinley announced the Mayor's Breakfast of Compassion to be held on September 22nd at the Crown Valley Community Center. Our meeting guests included David and Mai Lac, the parents of our two guest speakers. Bruce Birkeland presided over Sergeant At Arms duty. VP Stewart Mims introduced our two guest speakers, Benjamin and Ronald Lac.
In 2021, Camp RYLA was held virtually over a five evening period. Ben Lac attended this online event and quickly emerged as the selected "leader" among the 200 plus students that were participating. He took the initiative in keeping their activities moving along smoothly and encouraging other more reserved students to participate. As a self described independent loner, Ben found that he was able to make new friends, take charge of a situation and provide leadership when it was needed.
Earlier this year, Camp RYLA was held virtually over two nights and then in person at a camp in Idyllwild. Ben's younger brother, Ron Lac, participated in the virtual portion and then headed up to the camp. While traveling to the camp up in the mountain, he began to feel ill. By the time he arrived at the camp, he was truly in a quandary about how to proceed. Its just 2 days, perhaps he can push through it although not feeling well. He quickly realized he shouldn't put other students at risk and after a consultation with one of the camp counselors, they made the decision that he should go back home. Ron's father came to pick him up later that night. Ron took the entire situation as a lesson that although you may stand to lose in the short run, its better in the long run to do the right thing, and in this case, not put the entire group at risk of infection.

Ron made such a great impression that the head camp counselor guaranteed him a spot for Camp RYLA 2023 if he wishes to attend. Ben is considering returning to Camp RYLA as a student alumni to help run the program.

Coming up at the end of August, the City of Laguna Niguel’s Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting the 3-day Sea Country Festival starting Friday, August 26th through Sunday, August 28th. This end-of-summer event will include music, rides, games, food, and much more! Our club will be hosting a booth so we'll need volunteers to assist us. Please RSVP in the Sea Country Festival details below if you would like to assist in our Rotary booth. There will be different shifts available over that weekend.

We have lots of projects and events to look forward to throughout the rest of year. Please mark your calendars!

Yours in Service,
Chandra Chell
