This morning, President Biden released his inaugural skinny budget for Fiscal Year 2022, which contains largely topline spending details and highlights a few key investments. Media reports indicate that the Administration will issue a more detailed budget later this spring or in early summer. What this “skinny” budget shows plainly is that President Biden intends to make substantial investments in US Department of Education programs that his campaign focused on in 2020 – disadvantaged students, students with disabilities and minority serving institutions (MSIs) and Historically Black Colleges (HBCUs).

Things are moving forward in Washington, D.C. as Congress begins the annual budget and appropriations season. JNCL-NCLIS is already hard at work to secure another $15 million for the World Language Advancement and Readiness Act (WLARA) Grants Program, which launched this year. Now we need your help to let members in the House of Representatives know that this funding is critical.

National Bilingual/Multilingual Learner Advocacy Month is a time to celebrate and advocate for multilingual learners in our schools. There are multiple benefits to being multilingual, multiliterate, and multicultural in today’s global society. Benefits of Multilingualism, an infographic from the Office of English Language Acquisition (OELA), illustrates the cognitive, educational, economic, and sociocultural benefits of learning multiple languages.


The Coalition of Community-Based Heritage Language Schools and the Center for the Advancement of Languages, Education, and Communities (CALEC) are co-sponsoring a Webinar on Thursday, May 6, 11:00 AM Eastern time.
 
Steve Leveen has just published a new book, America’s Bilingual Century, which is very well written and filled with interesting information and stories of the work of leaders in bilingual schools and initiatives. Fabrice Jaumont will interview him, and one of his questions will be, What is the role of community-based heritage language schools in the bilingual century?

Four Coalition Language Representatives, serving as discussants, will have the opportunity to make comments and ask questions.
