Mike Johnson's Heartfelt Note
Don't miss reading the contents of the hand written letter received with Mike Johnson's dues renewal check this month. Mike Johnson, of Summer Hill Nursery in Madison, CT has been a member for 70 years!! Mike is 95 and we thank him for his unflagging support of IPPS. Here's what he has to say about his decades of membership in the IPPS Eastern Region:
I still join as a "Thank You" for all I learned in those early years - 1950's & 60's- in lectures but most in the bar after dinner. I still remember Ken Reich of Ohio State telling us about using plastic to protect container plants in winter. It changed the whole industry. Since I don't use a computer I have no idea what you are doing now but I'm still propagating plants!
Summer Hill Nursery started in the fall of 1957 when Mike Johnson built a greenhouse attached to an old chicken coop on family property. Although the nursery started as a field grown operation, Mike was one of the first nurserymen in New England to start growing landscape plants in containers in 1958. The business flourished and now Summer Hill offers over 1000 varieties of flowering trees, shrubs, groundcovers, broadleaf evergreens, conifers, grasses and hardy bamboo. A large selection of native plants is also a specialty.
If you haven't done so already, now is the time to renew your membership dues for the coming year. You can pay for one year or you can sign up for the automatic renewal option which charges your card once a year (on or near your expiration date) so you don't have to log in and renew! A reminder that if autorenewal is your preference (even if you enrolled previously), select "change" before selecting "renew" when you are within 30 days of your dues expiring (December 31st). Please note that the autorenewal membership can be added or removed from your account at any time throughout the year by going to the "My IPPS" part of your account and selecting "change".
