Dear Jardineros Members,

The winds of April brought us more 60th Anniversary Events. The Dinner and a Play Interest Group brought us a delightful afternoon filled with a theatrical presentation by local performer and playwright, Terri Klein on April 18. The interest group also coordinated an excursion to see a play directed by Terri, Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks, at the Adobe Theater in Albuquerque followed by dinner at the Range in Bernalillo on Sunday, May 4. Thank you, Ted Heath and Judy Labovitz and all the interest group members for organizing these theatrical experiences and providing such delicious refreshments.

To start our busy month of May, we will begin with our monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 7th at the Las Placitas Presbyterian Church with gathering and treats starting at 9:00 AM before our meeting begins at 9:30. This month our speaker is Jack Torres, the Mayor of Bernalillo. During his 15 years as Mayor, Jack Torres has overseen significant growth in Bernalillo. He has deep roots in Bernalillo and will share insights about his historic hometown. After the presentation we will break for more visiting and delicious food prepared by the Refreshment Committee. Then we will conclude with our business meeting before adjourning.

Mark your calendars as our Diamond Jubilee Year of Celebrations continues with these events over the next few months:

  • On Thursday May 15th, the Game Night Interest Group has organized Trivia at the Range in Bernalillo from 4:00 – 6:00 PM. Arrive between 3:30 and 3:45 to be seated in groups of 4 for the game presented by Brain Gang Trivia. Purchase a drink and any food you might want and get ready to demonstrate your knowledge of Placitas trivia. Seating is limited, so please RSVP to Kelli Ballengee by May 8, 2025.
  • On June 19th the History Mystery Road Rally will begin at the Placitas Community Library at 10:00 AM. Teams will drive a predetermined route to locate and photograph specific items of interest. Participants will meet back at the library to share pictures and tales collected on this fun scavenger hunt.
  • Then in July, we have the annual Placitas 4th of July Parade. More to come on special celebrations that day, but here is a hint: What might Lee Iacocca and Jardineros have in common? Think about it and the answer will be in a future letter.

Remember to bring your 2025 Yearbook to each event you attend. We are initialing the back cover of the Yearbook to document your attendance at an event. Those members with the most events attended will be entered into a special prize drawing at the Diamond Jubilee Celebration at the Prairie Star restaurant on December 7, 2025. If you forgot your Yearbook at an event, not to worry, we can update your attendance when you bring it to the next event.

Please note there is no charge for any of our planned events. But there will be a donation box at each event to help defray the costs incurred by the presenting group as groups do not receive any budgeted funds for these events. Thank you for your generosity.

In the April President’s Letter, I mentioned the Placitas Community Library’s annual Spring Fling held on April 12th. Our Plant Whisperers Interest Group participated again this year by conducting the Plant Sale at the library that day. Kudos to all the Plant Whisperers who raised $1,328.50 for the library! These dedicated folks sought plant donations, brought the plants to the library and manned the sales. What a wonderful example of the way Jardineros supports our community! Right now, the Plant Whisperers are busy planning ways to make next year’s event even more successful. We will hear more about opportunities for all who are interested in getting involved in the coming months. Take a look at the Plant Whisperers May newsletter to get an idea of all the opportunities for Jardineros members.

Don’t forget the Placitas Studio Tour. This year the Tour is three days, May 9th, 10th, and 11th – Mother’s Day Weekend. We have 12 of our Jardineros members participating this year. You can see examples of all the art on display at the Placitas Community Library through May 11th. If you haven’t had a chance to see the work, it is truly amazing and worth a stop.

Hold On to Your Hats – May is a busy one!

Cheers,

Janice
