Dear Jardineros Members,

September and Labor Day! Seems like we just observed Memorial Day and the 4th of July was just last week! How quickly it goes. And now the air is filled with the delightful smell of roasted green chili and we are anticipating cooler weather and all the activities associated with Fall. Our first step will be our meeting on Wednesday September 4th starting at 9:00 AM with delicious snacks and visiting at the Las Placitas Presbyterian Church. We will then proceed with our meeting and our very timely program.

Have you noticed any hot air balloons floating in the cool morning skies? I have seen a few and I am really looking forward to our program, Lighter Than Air. Placitas’ own Nancy Holley will share information about ballooning in general and tell us about the 52nd annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta that will begin this year on October 5th. Nancy and her husband Jim flew balloons for 21 years and are in their sixth year as officials with the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta Landowners Relations Team. I think it will be a great program and just what we need to get ready for skies filled with balloons of all shapes and sizes!

After our program we will break for more socializing and enjoying the fabulous food the Refreshment committee always brings. Then we will resume for our business meeting. During our business meeting Karen Croxton, the chair of the Nominating Committee, will present a slate of nominees for president, vice president, recording secretary, correspondence secretary and treasurer for 2025. Per our By-Laws, members may submit additional nominations by September 11 by contacting Karen either in person, by phone or email. All nominations will then be submitted to our webmaster who will prepare an electronic ballot and notify the membership. Voting will be open electronically for 10 days. The elected officers will be announced at the October regular meeting.

Please take time to review the August 7th Jardineros Meeting Minutes. Minutes are posted in our annual binder on the Jardineros website Membership page (right side bar, click on 2024 meeting minutes link).

I want to thank everyone who contributed to the August Community Service Collection. Because of your generosity, Haven House received a donation of $1,722 collected at our meeting. We will share a final total once the donations sent directly to Haven House are identified. A special thank you to Tricia Lund, Barbara Otter and Debbie Webster for coordinating this collection. Our next Community Service Collection will be for Seed2Need in October.

If you are looking for interesting activities as the air starts to get crisp don’t forget the Placitas Garden Tour. Last month Sandy Liakus and Lisa Fink told us about this year’s event that will take place on September 8th. The theme is Seeding for Sustainability and promises to be a real treat with seven beautiful gardens including the lush landscape at the home of our very own Linda and Ted Heath. And if you are craving a green chili cheeseburger, don’t forget the New Mexico State Fair that starts September 5th at Expo New Mexico. If you go be sure and stop by the Fine Arts Building and look for several of our Placitas artists who are exhibiting there – including a few of our Jardineros members!

Enjoy September! I look forward to seeing you on September 4th!

Cheers,

Janice
