October 2024

President Ken Daly with a student in the Romano Student Alumni Center

Friends,

As the calendar turns to October, I am delighted to report that our academic year is off to a wonderful start. Our newest students have settled in well and will be receiving a progress report next week to ensure they are on track right from the starting gate.

We now shift our focus to providing experiential learning opportunities as part of their academic journey. For me, the journey also began in October — October, 1987, that is! I was a college senior and was invited to attend a mock interview workshop with the local utility company. I typed my resume (yes, on a typewriter!), borrowed a suit, and wore white shoes and a leather tie to my interview. Somehow — after being mentored and developed a bit! — I was hired into my “first job” and spent the next 30 years with that same company throughout a wonderful career in the clean energy industry.

So, this October, I will visit each of our ten STAC 101 freshman classes to begin these important career conversations. The students will then advance onto STAC 102 next semester and then STAC 201 (first time being offered!) in their sophomore year in order to jumpstart their career preparation and search process. In these courses, experiential learning is embedded right into the curriculum and the students develop the real-world career skills they need to succeed in the future.

We also feature “STAC Chats” with prominent speakers, “STAC Your Future” career weeks, and a boot camp-type Skills Immersion Program. We help students find internships here on campus, or, ideally, with local employers in their fields of interest.  Ultimately, the goal is to start our students on their career journey.

Please read below to learn how we are helping our students take these important first steps in October … and, ultimately, find their first jobs.

Regards,

Special Message: We held a memorial service last week to remember the 1-year anniversary of the loss of our beloved student, Kayla Fitzpatrick, and lit our campus in purple — Kayla’s favorite color. We are comforted that Kayla’s memory will live on through a scholarship in her name in support of our students.

STAC Football Spoils Molloy’s Home Opener!

President Ken Daly joined Molloy University President Jim Lentini as Honorary Captains in Molloy’s first ever home game on Long Island in their inaugural Sprint Football season. The Spartans spoiled the party as Quarterback Ryan Kenny threw for three touchdowns to Jaden Bennermon, Davion Hicks ran for 86 yards and a touchdown, and JoJo Miranda and Ethan Hence combined for 15 tackles, in a dominating 59-7 victory. STAC is coming off our best season under Head Coach Matt Barry, who has led the program since our inaugural season in 2018.
