Welcome to the February edition of The Post and thanks for opening this to read about some updates on activities around your Club.
National Leadership College
Recently Tim Harrison (pictured above) attended the Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) National Leadership College and Tim shares this summary with us:
Last week I was fortunate enough to take part in the SLSA National Leadership College. The week long intensive program held in Sydney develops leaders and their skills within themselves, with others, small teams and at an organisational level. Throughout the week several keynote speakers, including Harriet Brown, Assistant Commissioner of Fire and Rescue Rob McNeil, SLSA CEO Adam Weir, Head of Retail Banking at ING Melanie Evans as well as many other excellent speakers made presentation about their work and their ways of leading themselves and others.
Everyone from the participant group is awesome and we all had a great time. The quality and work put into the week by facilitators, mentors and those organising is second to none. I would strongly encourage those who want to push themselves and develop their leadership to apply next year. Happy to answer and questions.
I would like to thank SLSA for hosting the week (especially at such a beautiful location on The Rocks next to Circular Quay), LSV for helping to organise and provide the opportunity across the state and the Pt Lonsdale SLSC for allowing me to grow and develop within the club and supporting me with this awesome opportunity and many others.
If anyone has any questions about the week or applying next year don't hesitate to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org
Back Beach Base update
You may have seen the safety fencing around the back beach base building over summer?
A few years ago we had a structural inspection carried out which identified corrosion issues in the building and noted that the building was suitable for use in the medium term however would eventually need work. We were hopeful that the building would remain serviceable until the clubhouse project had been completed and then we could turn our attention to the back beach base. Unfortunately a re-inspection by the engineer before Christmas noted the building had deteriorated faster than expected and there is a risk of concrete spalling off the facade so the fencing is required for safety. The building is not at risk of collapse so is still safe to access via the patrol room door but the damage has severely impacted on the functionality of the building. Lisa Neville (our local State MP with Ministerial responsibility for emergency services including life saving) has always been supportive of the club and in this case she has requested the Emergency Services Infrastructure Authority provide her with an urgent report on the condition of the building and options to address the issue. We understand the briefing report will be presented to her in the coming week or two and we are hopeful of a positive result given the importance of this building to the club providing vital life saving services on one of Victoria's most dangerous beaches.
Chair, Back Beach Base Working Group
Summer may be nearing an end but Patrols are not!
A reminder that volunteer Patrols are still in place on each and every weekend and Public Holidays right through until 22nd April.
All members of the patrol are essential and if you're going to have an issue attending please talk to your Patrol Captain early and below is some background information about what to do.
Building Committee Update
The Building Committee is continuing to work with a preferred builder to identify potential cost savings that may be adopted for the club house project. Subject to additional funds being raised (hopefully through the federal election process) we would then be in a position to sign a building contract and commence the clubhouse project but at this stage no commitment has been made to any builder.

New Clubhouse Capital Campaign Committee (NCCCC) Update
The NCCCC are pleased to report that the current pledged total has risen to $ 1.961 M and we extend our thanks to our generous donors who have assisted to get to this point.
Over the recent Christmas / New Year period we undertook a local mailbox leaflet drop, placed "tap n go" terminal in selected outlets and held another successful donor function which have assisted to boost the fundraising total.
We are currently seeking grants from several charitable trusts and corporate donors and should you have any suggestions / connections please pass this through to Barb Hurley at email@example.com who is coordinating this important effort.
Finally we continue our dialogue with local federal politicians / candidates as we attempt to secure federal funding for the current $ 1.25M shortfall.
Last Season (17/18) we achieved a record membership of 1237 and this year we have broken it - the total currently stands at an impressive 1295 and we want to reach 1300.
So, if you've heard from Ronnie in the Office recently, please touch base so that she can assist you with your renewal process.
LSV Champion Junior Lifesaver Development Day
Congratulations to Sophia Weine for completing Life Saving Victoria's Champion Junior Lifesaver Development Day.
Sophia was selected to participate because of her great attitude at the 2018 SRC camp and around the club this season.
She is pictured here with Club Captain Charlie Pitney who was a leader on the program.
Inaugural Starfish Carnival
Last weekend the inaugural Starfish Carnival was held at the Hampton Life Saving Club and supported by Life Saving Victoria. "Just wanted to say that we were guests of Hampton LSC Starfish Nippers today where PLSLSC starfish member Elias and his Dad Craig, along with my daughter Ingrid as helper, participated in this fantastic event. Cheers Georgia"
Aquatic Sports news
Well done to James Coutie who headed to Lorne for the Masters Championships and also bagged a Silver in Men's Beach flags and Bronze in the Sprint! Well done James.
In recent weeks it was great to see the Surf Boat out at Santa Casa - check out our social media for more on this.
We are also preparing to send off small teams to both the Junior and Senior State Championships and hope to have updates on this on our social media.
Betty Young - Celebration of Life Service
On 1st February, we lost much adored Life Member Betty (Elizabeth) Young.
Betty requested that her family, friends and members come together to celebrate all the wonderful memories at her much loved Surf Club.
On Saturday 23rd February you are invited to come and celebrate Betty's life at a service commencing at 5pm.
There is ample car parking available and this is best achieved in Ocean Road (please avoid Buckley's Rd and leave this free for less mobile attendees).
The Glaneuse Bar will be open after the service.
