PRESIDENT BOBBI TILLMON’S REPORT:
AAACJO’S REPRESENTATIVES AT THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF WOMEN JUDGES (IAWJ) IN BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA

Judge Marguerite Downing and I traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina to attend the 14th Biennial IAWJ Conference. More than 800 women judges, representing 97 countries, were in attendance.
We enjoyed excellent programming, which included a number of educational sessions, such as presentations regarding the work the IAWJ does on human trafficking, a worldwide issue, to a presentation on the environment in the context of sustainable growth and gender. Headphones were often required for translations, as you can see Judge Downing wearing, because most of the presentations were in Spanish or languages other than English. Supreme Court Associate Justices Sotomayor and Ginsburg participated by taped video or live streaming.
We were treated to an US Embassy reception at the ambassador’s residence, a beautifully restored palace. We posed by the plaque in the residence, from the Obamas’ visit in 2016, with a retired judge from Pennsylvania and Federal Judge Consuelo Marshall and her daughter.
The current President of the National Association of Women Judges (NAWJ), Justice Tanya Kennedy from New York, and I are in our red, white and blue to celebrate and coordinate with all NAWJ members on the last day of the conference when the new IAWJ President, Judge Vanessa Ruiz, was installed. She is from the United States.
One of the highlights of the conference was when the very powerful documentary film called “The Judge” was shown. It is about the first female Sharia law judge in the Middle East to preside over this religious court, documenting her many struggles and challenges. The next conference will be in Auckland, New Zealand in 2020.

Prior to the conference, Judge Downing and I, with friends, including some lawyers and judges from across the US and Canada, and of course, my husband Cecil, enjoyed visiting Rio De Janeiro and Brazil tourist sites. Some of the sites we visited included Christ the Redeemer statute on Corcovado mountain, Sugarloaf Mountain, Copacabana Beach, Ipanema Beach, Iguazu Falls from the Brazil and from the Argentina side, and Sambódromo, where the annual carnival viewing and judging occur. I encourage AAACJO members to meet and enjoy judicial officers from other states and countries to truly appreciate how important the work is that we do.

Juneteenth in Sacramento

On Monday, June 11, 2018 , a delegation of African-American Judicial officers will join the California Legislative Black Caucus for their Juneteenth recognition. Last year, 43 judicial officers attended. This year, we are hoping to double that number. The goal is to continue to build and maintain a strong relationship with our legislative partners.

Details of the day will be finalized soon, but our hope is that we will begin the day with a reception with the members of the Caucus around 11:00 a.m. Afterward, we will visit both the Assembly and the Senate, and then take our group picture on the Senate floor. Everything should be concluded by 3:00 p.m.

If you are interested in attending, please RSVP to Judge Michael D. Carter at MDCarter@lacourt.org by June 4th . Judge Carter will prepare a list of attendees to forward to the Caucus.

We look forward to seeing everyone in Sacramento on June 11th!
