President's Update

Dear Families,

I once heard a pastor share a story about Alexander the Great. Although it might be a fictional story, I thought it was powerful.

One day, Alexander was holding court in the grand palace. He had conquered the known world, and no one could stand against him. The king sat upon a great golden throne in an immense palace. There, he held court to pass judgment on those who had broken the law. Alexander was known to never show mercy, especially in cases of cowardice or disloyalty.

The soldiers brought forth a young man and pronounced his crime and stated, “He was found cowering in a cave during battle.”

Alexander’s expression hardened since this was a crime he could not tolerate. Yet, as he looked at the face of this young man, his countenance changed. Alexander remembered his youth – in particular the times when he had not made the best choices. Maybe this one time, he could show mercy. Alexander’s tone softened, and he smiled at the young lad. He asked, “Son, what is your name?”

The boy responded, “Alexander.”

The smile left the king’s face, and his complexion turned crimson: “What is your name!” he repeated.

The young man stood at attention and said, “Alexander, sir!”

Alexander burst out of his chair and grabbed the young man by the tunic. He lifted him up and threw him to the ground, shouting, “Soldier, change your conduct or change your name!”

The pastor who told the story emphasized to parishioners that those who call themselves Christian should emulate Christ - just as the young Alexander was called to emulate Alexander the Great. Our conduct reflects Him, who we follow, as He calls us to love God and to love others as we love ourselves. As we have just celebrated His resurrection, we are now called to witness Christ’s power over death through our words and actions.

If then you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. Colossians 3:1-3

Thank you for you support,

John Thornburg
