President's Update
Dear Families,

When my son, Tim, was entering his sophomore year of high school, he agreed to attend the military academy where I was employed as a teacher. His grades had not been very strong and we thought the smaller classrooms and military structure would help him be more successful. Although it was a boarding school, Tim was able to remain at home because our home was on campus. The school however, did require him to attend a one-week orientation that included living in the dormitories.

During the week of Tim's onsite orientation, I attended in-service for faculty. Walking to and from school, I saw groups of new students outside the dorms involved in various activities. I didn’t want to embarrass Tim, so I did my best to avoid these groups of students and give him the space he needed to make new friends without interference from his father. One day, as I crossed the street towards my home, a group of new students passed in front of me. I scanned to make sure Tim was not in the group and when I didn't see him, I proceeded to greet the students with a warm hello.

Imagine my surprise when one of the students, a tall young man that I did not recognize, responded, “Hi, Dad.”

I studied the young man further. All new students were required to get short haircuts. After further review, I recognized this young man. It was, in fact, my son. He gave me a familiar smile and seemed to enjoy conversing with his new friends.

You may be familiar with a story in the Bible that occurs after Jesus’ resurrection. Two disciples are walking down the road towards a village called Emmaus. While on their way, a stranger joins them and asks what they are discussing. They recount everything that had happened surrounding the death and resurrection of Jesus. Later that evening, while breaking bread, the two disciples realize the stranger is Jesus Christ. They had not recognized the Son of God although He had been speaking to them. “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”

The story reminds me of the time when I had not recognized my own son. It wasn’t until I had taken the time to understand who was speaking to me - that I knew it was in fact him. Sometimes we do not recognize the voice of Jesus, so it is important to set aside time to listen, pray to Him, and center ourselves.

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. (John 10:27)

Thank you for your support,

John K. Thornburg
