President's Update
Dear Families,

This is our first edition of the President’s Update. This change in publication title reflects the trend within the Xaverian Brothers school network and in most Catholic and private schools to utilize a President - Principal model. Going forward, all chief administrators at Malden Catholic will have the title of “President” rather than “Headmaster.”

Discussions began last year between our Board of Trustees and the Xaverian Schools Sponsored Network (XBSS) regarding the title change. At our Board meeting in February, there was unanimous support and encouragement from the Board to adopt the new title by April 2022. Therefore, effective April 1, my title has changed to "President" and this is reflected in my business cards, school communication and publications including this weekly newsletter. The school's leadership model and my duties/responsibilities will remain the same.

I announced the upcoming change to the faculty and staff a few weeks ago. They were supportive, and I heard some feedback that included teasing about my possible delusions of grandeur. The comments were all good-natured, and as mentioned before, I don’t anticipate any changes in my MC daily routines. I will remain “Mr. Thornburg,” and utilize my new title with outside constituencies and at formal school events. I believe the new title will also communicate my role at the school more effectively.

We have a rich history of faith-filled leaders who have shepherded Malden Catholic to the great institution it is today. The title "Headmaster had been reserved for the Xaverian Brothers who led the school by faith and whose foundation we now build upon. Brother Gilbert, Brother Lambert, Brother Duffy, Brother Cook and Brother Green, to name a few. In fact, the last person to served as the chief administrator before me was none other than Brother Thomas Puccio. We appreciate all of his hard work and dedication over the past 36 years and I believe he is the perfect person with whom the title should retire.

Thank you for your support,

John K. Thornburg
President

2022 is a momentous year for Malden Catholic – we are celebrating our 90th anniversary and the first class of Girls Division students to graduate in May 2022 along with the Boys Division. Truly, Malden Catholic is Leading Beyond all Expectations…generations of extraordinary young adults have and will continue to flourish from the education provided by this outstanding institution. The school has fostered and will continue to create men and women that exemplify leadership, character and success.

In this tradition, we are delighted to celebrate a couple who personify these pillars - Dr. Daniel J. McCarthy ’50 and Mrs. Margaret T. (Noonan) McCarthy GC ’50 as our Plus Ultra Honorees. Longtime benefactors of the school, Dr. and Mrs. McCarthy MC & GC 1950 have established scholarship funds for Malden Catholic Girls and Boys Divisions as well as a fund in memory of Margaret’s cousin Margaret M. Dunphy 1961. They are also members of the Plus Ultra and the Saint Francis Xavier Societies. We are most grateful to Margaret and Dan McCarthy for their tremendous dedication and commitment to Malden Catholic.
