President's Update

Dear Families,

This week was Founder’s Week for all Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools (XBSS). Founder’s Week is dedicated to recognizing and honoring Theodore James Ryken as the founder of the Congregation of the Brothers of St. Francis Xavier (the formal name for the Xaverian Brothers).

Founder’s Week was celebrated through a variety of student activities throughout the week, including the morning prayer centered around the Xaverian spiritual values, a Xaverian-themed Pizza and Prayer, a school-wide scavenger hunt, and a homeroom poster contest. Additionally, students wrote thank you cards to the Xaverian Brothers and enjoyed Belgium waffles in the cafeteria to recognize Xaverian Brothers Foundation Day in Bruges, Belgium. The week concluded with our St. Francis Xavier Founder’s Day Mass, which included the presentation of the Theodore James Ryken Award.

Our theology classes have been discussing the history of the Xaverian Brothers, the 13 American schools in our network, and the fundamental principles. During one of my many walks through the hallways, Mr. Gregory asked me to come into his class. The class was discussing the origins of Malden Catholic and how the Brothers came to form our school. Mr. Gregory asked me what it was like in the '90s when there were so many Brothers still living and teaching at MC. This led to a deeper discussion about the impact the Brothers had on me as a student and my classmates. We then talked about their ability to positively impact the whole community including parents, faculty, staff, coaches, and alumni.

We are blessed to have active Brothers on campus, such as Brother Tom Puccio, who serves as MC’s Director of Mission Integration and teaches theology classes, Brother Ed Rice, whose art is displayed around the school and Brother Tim Hoey who lends his guidance to our Mock Trial Team.

From the beginning, the Brothers instilled in all students the values of Humility, Simplicity, Compassion, Trust, and Zeal, shaping our daily routines at school and home. Under the guidance of the Xaverian Brothers, our XBSS Student Leaders light the path, continuing this way of life in our now codivisional school.

The Fundamental Principles of the Brothers of Saint Francis Xavier call us to be “ready to answer when asked if you are available for God to become more present in your life and through you to the world.” The Brothers provided us with examples of how to be present and ready to do whatever is necessary for the good of the community. We encourage students to participate in a variety of cocurriculars, service projects, and athletics. This serves as a reminder of how students continue to receive a Catholic education in the tradition of the Xaverian Brothers and allows them “to be formed by God through the common, ordinary, unspectacular flow of everyday life,” both inside and outside of the classroom.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey P. Smith '95, P'24, '26
