President's Update

Dear Families,

I love to hear the reactions of people who are new to Malden Catholic and to our students. Perhaps they’ve never been in a Catholic school before. Perhaps, after a long career in public education, they’re new members of our own faculty or staff.  Perhaps, they’re guests on a Shadow Day or folks from the neighborhood who have worked with our students on a service activity. What I’ll hear most often is high praise – even amazement – at the generally positive disposition of our students, at the welcoming “feel” to the place, at the way we rather purposefully get things done. I’m well-past surprise at those reactions, but I always enjoy hearing them! They say that we’re doing something right!

When our Mission has it that we enlist the Xaverian “spiritual values of simplicity, humility, compassion, trust, and zeal,” that “we inspire students to lives of service, leadership, and excellence,” that we aspire to be “an inclusive community of faith,” nurturing “enduring personal relationships and life-long learning,” why should I be surprised!

This week Malden Catholic joins Catholic schools around the nation in celebrating Catholic Schools Week, taking justifiable pride in what we do.  The theme is “Catholic Schools: United in Faith and Community.”

Did you know that:

  • There are 5,920 Catholic schools nationwide.
  • Of those, 4,746 are elementary/middle schools; 1,174 are high schools; a handful are co-divisional!
  • Catholic schools cover a broad demographic swath of our country: 1,814 are urban; 472 are inner-city; 2,411 are suburban; 1,216 are rural; 7 are virtual.
  • Catholic schools are increasingly diverse with 23.1% of students who are racial minorities; of those, 18.3% are Hispanic. Malden Catholic is more than 35% diverse.
  • Catholic high schools have a 98.9% graduation rate, as compared to an 86% public school rate.
  • The percentage of high school students to attend 4-year colleges is 86.2% for Catholic schools; 63.7% for other religious schools; 55.6% for non-sectarian private schools; and 45% for public schools.
  • 80% of Catholic high school students complete their college careers within 6 years, while only 50% of public-school graduates do so.

Thank you for your partnership, which allows us to join you in guiding your children into a promising adulthood! Can you think of a time when we’ve needed Catholic education more? I can’t.  In a world of swirling change and moral compromise, Catholic education at Malden Catholic provides both an anchor and a springboard. We remind students daily that each of us reflects the Creator: we find God in one another. In the tradition of Xaverian spirituality, we conclude that God is ever-present in the common, ordinary, unspectacular flow of everyday experience. As always, in what we do, we continue to need your help! We will be asking you soon, “How are we doing?” as we prepare for our ten-year New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) accreditation process. This begins with a “Mission Effectiveness” survey prepared in collaboration with our Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools Office. President Thornburg soon will be sharing more on that. Till then, thanks for being a partner in Mission… and… Happy Catholic Schools Week!

Sincerely,

Brother Thomas Puccio C.F.X., Ed.D., H'18
