President's Update

Dear Families,

Two weeks ago, I had the pleasure of accompanying seven of our students – one senior and six juniors -- for five days in West Hartford, CT, for our Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools Student Retreat.  This is one of the great programs run through our Sponsorship Office, bringing together 92 young men and women from our 13 Sponsored Schools. They hail from Kentucky, Maryland, New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. Adult leaders, mostly Campus Ministers from those schools, guide students through long days of relationship building in a wide variety of forms: praying together, eating together, recreating together, performing service, attending keynote presentations, participating in small group and large group conversations. By the end of five days, they feel part of a larger Xaverian community and have formed friendships, some of which may last a lifetime.

Students sometimes interact with their own school group, but more often they work with an assigned group made up of students from six other schools; so, students from Massachusetts, for instance, find out what they have in common with students from Xaverian schools across the Northeast. They’re surprised at how much! They learn about how the call of Xaverian Brothers Founder Theodore Jame Ryken compelled him to serve the Church of his day and how his values permeate our schools today. They are invited to deeper awareness of God at work in their lives and are empowered to bring a message of service back to their respective schools.

Each school group was tasked with creating and conducting a prayer service for the large group. Our Malden Catholic team worked up a skit from a short story called “The Ragman.” In it, a Christ-figure “ragman” collects and exchanges the troubles and burdens of the “down-and-out,” restoring them to health and “wholeness.” The ragman dies and returns to life. His story is about “redemption” – trading in our weaknesses and flaws for Christ’s healing and grace. It points toward the great redemptive act of Jesus that we soon will celebrate on Good Friday and Easter. It was quite moving to see the skit enacted in the large chapel of the Passionist Retreat Center and equally fun to see our XBSS group reprise it just this past Thursday evening at our “Pizza and Prayer”!

The themes of each Retreat Day are excerpts from The Fundamental Principles of the Xaverian Brothers. I would like to share them here, as they are, quite simply, at the core of a Catholic worldview and great topics for Lenten reflection for each of us.

  • Day 1: You are Created by a God of Love
  • Day 2: In God’s Image and According to God’s Likeness
  • Day 3: As a Unique Expression of God’s Love
  • Day 4: Intended to Manifest God’s Love to the Peoples of the World
  • Day 5: So… Stand Ready to Answer God’s Call

These five lines, really, are the sub-text of all we do at Malden Catholic, an understanding that we hope will remain with our young men and women long after the quadratic formula is forgotten. How liberating and empowering it can be to realize that we are God’s children; that God breathed spirit into us; that God made no one else ever like us; that we are called simply to share God’s love however we can. As our retreatants headed home on Day 5, they were charged – and “charged up” – to bring a plan of service back to MC. They will be the “action arm” of Campus Ministry next year. But the “charge” is there for all our students – and for all of us – to be attentive to ways God calls us to love each day and to be responsive to that call. I wish you and family the love and peace of Jesus, our Redeemer, at Easter!

Senior Basket Forms - Due by 3.25

It has become an annual tradition for Malden Catholic underclass families to support the graduating class through the Senior Basket Program. This program provides unique and thoughtful baskets of gifts and goodies to MC Seniors.

Underclass families are invited to adopt a Senior and create a basket based on the student's individual preferences and interests. The completed basket will then be either delivered by the host family to the Senior's home or dropped off at MC for the student to pick up. A short prayer service will be held at the school on Saturday, April 27 to launch the basket deliveries.

Parents of students in Grades 9-11 who are interested in participating in the program must submit their name, phone number, email address, the number of Seniors for whom they plan to create baskets, their preference for the Boys Division or Girls Division, and the name of the Senior(s) they prefer to create baskets for to Mrs. Jeannine Reardon at [email protected] by Monday, March 25.
