President's Update

Dear Families,

My family moved to a new neighborhood when I was in third grade. Across the street from our new home lived a boy named Scott. He was a year older than me. I quickly learned that in order to survive in the neighborhood, I had to be friends with him. Anyone kid who was not Scott's friend would be subject to teasing or other antics. Since I was the “new guy” - I made sure we were friends.

However, there were risks to being friends with Scott because he like to put his friends in challenging situations without disclosing the truth. One day, he enthusiastically told me about a wrestling club he had just joined. I told him it sounded like fun and he immediately invited me to the club to wrestle. He said, “There is this guy at the club that even you could beat.”

Once I entered the gymnasium where the wrestling club was held, it became apparent that the “guy even I could beat” was fictional. I was the smallest wrestler in the room and Scott was the second smallest. He invited me to join him because he needed a person he could beat and that is exactly what happened. Scott was two inches taller and twenty pounds heavier than me and he threw me around the gym effortlessly. That day, I remember spending most of my time staring up at the gym lights as I lay on the wrestling mat.

I tried a few wrestling moves the coach had demonstrated when I first arrived. No matter what moves I tried, Scott would counter, pick me up over his shoulder and slam me down on the mat. I gave up trying to engage and focused on finding the best way to gracefully survive repeated body slams. Then, as Scott was coming in for another thrashing, he suddenly stopped. The coach, watching my fate, had decided that enough was enough. The coach threw Scott around the gym, much like Scott had done to me. When the coach had finished, Scott was much more subdued. I found wrestling much more enjoyable when the coach acted as referee and kept his eye on us.

Life is full of circumstances over which we have no control. Even though we try a new strategy or put forth more effort, sometimes we still can get thrown around – just like Scott did to me. Yet, we have a Heavenly Father who sees and understands our challenges. Much like the wrestling coach he watches us and promises to be there with us... and at certain times, he intervenes on our behalf.

The writer of Ecclesiastes outlines the trials all of us encounter. He ponders the existence of a loving God while living in a world of pain and death. The author concludes that we should enjoy the beautiful moments of life while loving God and keeping His commandments. We are, after all, made for an eternal relationship with our Lord.

So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:18

Thank you for your support,

John K. Thornburg
