President's Update

Dear Families,

My wife and I were traveling in a different country with a language and currency that I could not understand. We were at the airport waiting for our flight when she informed me, she was hungry. We decided she would wait with the luggage while I found food.

I found a sandwich counter and pointed at what looked like a ham and cheese sandwich. A few moments later, the sandwich appeared, and I paid with my credit card. I sat down with my wife, and we split the sandwich. My wife noticed the receipt and was curious what I paid.

“This sandwich cost twenty-three dollars!” she exclaimed.

My wife is the cost savings partner in our marriage and I was in trouble. I tried to explain that the sandwich seemed to be listed at cheaper price, but no explanation would convince her I had made a good financial decision. I can’t say that I enjoyed the sandwich.

As we flew home, a thought came to me. The price on the receipt might not have been in U.S. currency, but in the currency of the country we visited! I checked my credit card charges when we arrived home and proudly shared with my wife that the sandwich had only been six dollars. The real issue had been the fact that neither of us understood the currency.

Understanding how much something costs and knowing that it is paid for is important. Our Lord Jesus Christ made it clear when He was on the cross. One of His last words was, “It is finished,” which, in the original Greek, was “tetelestai.” This term was used in commercial transactions at the time. When someone had provided the required payment, the word would be written to indicate the transaction was finished because it was “paid in full.”

Our Lord’s death accomplished what no other person could have done. He paid for our transgressions and paid them in full. He did not leave any room for arguments about the price and if the price had been paid.

It is humbling to realize His death and resurrection, so long ago, still have a powerful impact for our lives today. We can know that Christ paid for our sins and allowed us to find new life in Him.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, they are a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. God doesn’t just wipe off the dirt and put some new clothes on the person. No, He completely changes them from the inside out making the us into a brand new person.

2 Corinthians 5:17

Sincerely,

John K. Thornburg
