President's Update

Dear Families,

My closet contains three suits that I have not worn in the last three years. They are three of my favorite suits and still almost like new. They retired early because I added a few pounds and the pants no longer fit. I kept the suits thinking that I would lose the weight and be able to wear them again. Unfortunately, instead of losing a few pounds the scale has inched in the opposite direction.

I decided that instead of losing weight, it was more realistic to have the waistlines let out to accommodate my new dimensions. So, I brought the suits to a tailor and asked him to add an inch or so to the waist. He didn’t seem to trust me and directed me to a dressing room to put on one of the pairs of pants. After a little struggle, I emerged wearing the pants, doing my best to breathe.

The tailor looked me up and down and said, “I want to speak with your wife.” Before I could reply, he added, “She is feeding you too much.” Funny guy. I can’t say that tailor humor is something I appreciate. He marked my pants for alterations, and I left.

A week later the tailor called - my pants were ready! I arrived and he directed me to try a pair on. The pants fit but were still a bit tight. They weren’t as tight as before, but it wasn’t the easy fit that I expected, so I mentioned the tight fit to him. He checked them and said they fit. I repeated they were a little tighter than I liked. His response: “I’ve done my work, now you can do yours” referencing my need to lose weight.

Ephesians 2 tells us “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith and this is not from yourselves, it is a gift of God.” God has done the work to provide a relationship with Him and our salvation. Though God has accomplished blessings beyond measure through Jesus Christ, we still have our own work to do in light of these blessings.

A later verse continues, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” God has done His work, now He looks for us to do ours. God has altered our eternity and now He looks for us to fit into the good works He has prepared ahead of time. Just as the tailor did his work, it is up to me to do some work as well to best fit into God’s plans.

Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies. (Philippians 4)

Sincerely,

John K. Thornburg

Senior Basket Forms - Due by 3.25

It has become an annual tradition for Malden Catholic underclass families to support the graduating class through the Senior Basket Program. This program provides unique and thoughtful baskets of gifts and goodies to MC Seniors.

Underclass families are invited to adopt a Senior and create a basket based on the student's individual preferences and interests. The completed basket will then be either delivered by the host family to the Senior's home or dropped off at MC for the student to pick up. A short prayer service will be held at the school on Saturday, April 27 to launch the basket deliveries.

Parents of students in Grades 9-11 who are interested in participating in the program must submit their name, phone number, email address, the number of Seniors for whom they plan to create baskets, their preference for the Boys Division or Girls Division, and the name of the Senior(s) they prefer to create baskets for to Mrs. Jeannine Reardon at [email protected] by Monday, March 25.

Please note that requests for specific Senior(s) are not guaranteed and they are assigned on a first come, first served basis.
