President's Update

Dear Families,

One summer, I worked for a landscaping company, working at their nursery. From pulling weeds to watering plants, my days were spent completing menial labor. I realized there was a pecking order and all the new people started out doing these types of jobs. If I was going to be given more responsibility and rewarding work, I would have to earn it.

After several weeks, the owner came and told me I would be working out in the fields where the young trees (saplings) grew. I was excited about this unexpected promotion and quickly jumped into the bed of the work truck with one other guy named Brent. We smiled at each other, as we both knew we were moving up in the world!

We were driven to a space of land consisting of several acres lined with young trees. The owner explained that all the trees needed additional water due to the recent hot, dry weather. It was a hot day - and seemed even more so out in the middle of the field. The owner demonstrated how to dig up a mound of soil using a shovel around each tree, so it formed a circle. He told us this was called a “berm”; the berm would hold additional water.

Then, he took the large hose from the watering truck (parked nearby) and watered the tree with the berm. I noticed that the berm worked exactly as he had predicted forming a pool of water several inches deep around the tree. He then proceeded to give us shovels, instructing us to get started. He appointed Brent as the operator of the water hose after each berm was dug. My guess was he had seniority over me for some unknown reason.

Brent said we should start on separate trees instead of working on the same one. That seemed reasonable and I began to dig. Just as I finished my first berm, Brent was there to fill it with water. I dug my second berm. Brent quickly filled it. We were making good progress.

After an hour or so of repeating the dig and water process, I looked back to check on our work. It was then I noticed the only trees that had been completed were the ones that I dug. Brent had only been watering trees and not digging. He had turned the water pressure low enough so the time it took him to water each tree equaled the time it took me to dig a berm. He had left me with all the hard work.

One of our Xaverian values is trust: “the firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something”. Brent lost my trust as he did not follow through on our partnership as we worked in the field. I made sure the both of us dug together and then watched him water each tree. He was not a reliable co-worker.

As a Xaverian Brothers Sponsored School, we know that trust is total confidence in our God and our brothers and sisters in Christ (taken from The Spiritual Values of the Xaverian Charism). Trust is what our community is built upon and enables each of us to experience a supportive community. Trust enables us to live our faith in the One working alongside of us.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Matthew 11:28-30
