President's Update

Dear Families,

A small parade of students is marching by my 2nd-floor office right now. They’re lugging boxes from the Campus Ministry Center, laden with food, taking them down to the front lobby, where they’ll be delivered to the Peabody charity, "Gina's Giving Back." Zeal is one of the Xaverian spiritual values that we articulate in our MC Mission Statement. It doesn’t end there, though, as just a word in print. We celebrate it quite regularly in action! We routinely see zeal in our daily Malden Catholic activities, both in academics and in extracurriculars. After 38 years at MC, I’m ever-amazed at the expressions of zeal one can encounter in the sweep of just a single week. Let me recount, with thanks, a few I’ve noticed recently.

We can start with the Make-A-Wish ceremony last week, where our MC Club made an $11,373 donation from last year’s fundraising and announced for the 5th consecutive year the granting of a Wish to a child seriously ill. The Club was at it again this past Tuesday afternoon, hosting a Volleyball Tournament that engaged 72 students on 12 teams in several rounds of furious play! Our Varsity Volleyball coaches Bailey and Johanna generously volunteered 2 ½ hours in the Gym to officiate 9 matches, where eager players left no call uncontested! The tourney and accompanying bake sale, thanks to zealous student-and-parent bakers – and voracious, kind eaters! -- garnered close to $1000.

There’s got to be something heroic about parents who slog through a busy day at work and then make it to School in the afternoon or evening. Many did that just last week for our Parent-Teacher sessions. The same can be said, of course, for teachers who managed smiles right through 7:30pm!  Our many Honor Roll recipients give testimony to the zeal with which students attacked their 1st Quarter challenges.  Parents were back again this past Wednesday night to applaud the 500 student athletes completing a spirited fall season. It certainly takes dedication and zeal for students to start an athletic season in the heat of August and take it through the chills of November. Taking a ride out to Gardner last weekend, I saw just that as Varsity Cross-Country Boys and Girls competed zealously in MIAA Tournament competition, offering gritty 5K performances in the cold autumn breezes.  The next day, two of our Girl Swimmers brought home medals and a Championship title, and Varsity Cheer moved on to the next round of their competition.

Elsewhere, just three days ago, Mrs. Mary-Anne DiMarco and a team of zealous faculty-and-staff volunteers continued her longstanding labor of love, hosting a traditional Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings for all of our international students and other guests. As you can see just from these few examples from a single week, the thread of zeal is well-woven in our Malden Catholic fabric. For the many things for which we may be thankful at our approaching Thanksgiving, may we thank God for blessing our School community with the richness of zeal!  Happy Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,

Brother Thomas Puccio C.F.X., Ed.D., H'18
