President's Update

Dear Families,

As we enter fall, we are invited to reflect upon the essence of change. The weather is starting to get a little cooler, the leaves are turning gold, burnt orange and red and we pull out our jackets and coats. In fact, one of my favorite Saturday Night Live skits refers to autumn in New England as “sweater weather” with SNL actors attempting to (poorly) imitate a Boston accent.

As the changes in life continue, our adaptive responses are often tested. Some changes are easy to make such as raking falling leaves off the lawn, bringing in the patio furniture and tuning up the snow blower. We are accustomed to these changes and can easily prepare for what the next new season will bring.

However, our community has experienced some very difficult changes over the past month with the loss of several community members. Although many of us have experienced death in our lives, unlike the seasons, those impacted by the passing of a loved one can’t anticipate the sudden impact it will have on their lives. One of the amazing things about the Malden Catholic community is our ability to rally around each other in times of need. Compassion and trust are two of the Xaverian Brothers core values and at MC, our entire community works to exemplify them in their daily life. I am honored to say that many individuals and groups have come forward to support those who have experienced recent loss – either by attending services, sending food to the family home or remembering the deceased in the silence of our hearts.

We will continue to support all members of our community but especially those experiencing great change and needing assistance during these difficult times. We offer our thoughts, prayers and love to the families of Matt Jones, Gary Lopresti, Tara Gowrie, Michael Hurley, and to all other families who have lost a loved one recently.

May the road

rise up to meet you.

May the wind

be always at your back.

May the sun

shine warm upon your face;

the rains

fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,

may God hold

you in the palm of His hand.

ALS has touched the lives of many in our Malden Catholic community. We walk in memory of MC alum Tim Paquette ’07, son of MC School Nurse Elizabeth Paquette and MC Swim Coach Rick Paquette, and Xaverian Brother Joseph Comber, C.F.X., who had lived in community with Brothers Daniel Cremin, Timothy Hoey, and Thomas Puccio. PSAT for Grades 9, 10 & 11 - 10.18 at 8 AM

As part of our comprehensive school and college counseling program, Malden Catholic provides students with the opportunity to take the PSAT, also known as the Practice or Preliminary SAT. All 9th, 10th and 11th grade students are required to take the PSAT at MC on October 18. The test will take approximately 2-3 hours to complete.

To participate in the exam, all students must download the app Bluebook to their device before Wednesday, October 4. Student devices will be checked in homerooms on this day to ensure the app is downloaded and working correctly. If you have any issues, please contact your school counselor or the Technology department by Tuesday, October 3.

The PSAT covers two sections: Evidenced- Based Reading and Writing (sometimes referred to as the "Verbal" section) and Mathematics. Counselors will then use the scores to help students understand their current college preparedness including areas of strength and areas in need of improvement.

Grade 12 will use October 18 as a College Visit Day and will not report to school.
